I work with urban youth and I've noticed that most of the popular, upcoming hip hop they listen to is a combination of whiney, edgy and self pitying like the examples of above.

Pair that with the fact that alot of the up and coming hip hop artists are depressed-acting guys covered with tattoos, tight jeans and spiky, multicolored hair then it becomes clear that rap music is entering it's version of an emo/scene phase

And hopefully that shit blows over soon

They're just following the precedent that Drake and a few other rappers set for them. Drake at first made it clear that you don't need to live the "thug life" to make decent rap music. No one really wants to pretend to be something they're not just to make music, so they can be exposed for being a fraud later for not being "about that life". It happened with Future but he's already too popular so it didn't matter. People are desperate for something different and everyone knows that songs about "muh dick...muh money...yo bitch...muh clothes...muh whip" are so grossly overdone by now.

There was an interview with Future last year where he basically said he doesn't use all the drugs that he mentions in his songs, and he was never a drug addict. It's just part of the act, and just marketing because it's catchy. There was a good amount of people who got mad about this, but honestly if he were taking molly, percocets, xans, codeine, etc on the daily he would've been dead by now. So I don't know why people were surprised.
