How acceptable is it, in a colder climate (think New England), to wear a tweed jacket casually? Would it come as pretentious or out of place?

depends on the jacket you get, some are way too formal for casual fits, but it's definitely possible to pull it off with the right one

dont' fucking wear it with pre-washed jeans and an office dress-shirt like this dweeb

Could a person with broad shoulders pull off a tweed jacket? I get the feeling they'd come off as a neckbeard.

It's acceptable but don't wear it with a dress shirt and tie.

If you really want to wear it with a shirt, wear a sweater over it. Or better yet, just wear a crew neck sweater and no shirt underneath.

And unless you look like David Gandy ditch the pocket square.

Do it man, just make sure it fit's properly. Nothing worse than a tweed jacket with hanging sleeves of a wizard
