What I have now is really low maintenance. I just wash and dry, maybe flatten it out with my hand. My hair used to be ~18 inches but I got tired of it after so many years.
I would prefer to keep the mustache and beard. If I had to keep only one, it would be the mustache. My original plan was to grow out the corners of my mustache and then once it was long enough, do something similar to Fu Manchu, Hulk Hogan, or Sam Elliot.

Got a question for people that know more about hair care than I

I keep getting hair splinters from my facial hair and it's driving me nuts. It only ever happens for 1-2 days after shaving or trimming, and they only seem to get lodged in my fingers. I'm guessing what's happening is that the ends are sharp or something from shaving, and when they get lodged in my skin they break off since it's always small pieces that get stuck and they're usually all the way past the top layer of skin, so I've basically got to cut them out with fingernail clippers. Happens both from beard/moustace when trimmed and a while after shaving my cheeks/sideburns smooth.
Short of not shaving again for the rest of my life, how can I prevent this from happening? Yesterday I unconsciously touched my chin and ended up with 4 splinters in my fingers, and after spending ~30 minutes excavating for them I feel like I need to address the issue

If you own clippers and a set of guards its really easy. If you don't, go buy a set with an adjustable taper.
Brush or pick out your hair first. For a buzzcut just start with a longer guard and shave your whole head. If you think its too long, just use the next longest guard. Keep buzzing until you've got the length you want, then decide if you want to make the sides shorter than the top, taper, etc. Don't be too afraid to mess up and go a little too short, for me it only took a few weeks for a 1 to get back to a 3. Don't worry about messing up your hairline, as long as you're using a guard you won't be close enough to the skin to do so.

i've been cutting my own hair for 11 years and am looking to finally get it styled properly.

hairline is shit but isn't going anywhere, that said i'm not sure it matters because it's bad enough as is that i have a hard time pulling off any bangs. typical fade advice just highlights my forehead, and while i'd probably look great if i shaved and got swole i'm too comfortable and undisciplined as a hungry skeleton
