Reposting since last thread got archived with no answer with my message being the last one.

I've been looking for a dress watch and I am almost desperate. You are my last resort /fa/

* Considered options:

- pic related
- Bering 11938-000
- casio MTP-1183PA-7A (but it's probably too small for me)
- casio MTP-V005D-7A (does not really dress that well)

Also something in the lines of Daniel Wellington would be interesting, but I don't think their price is fair. Unbranded replicas are out of the question because I don't want to be perceived as that kind of guy and several colleagues wear real DWs.

* Desired characteristics:

My wrist size is 6.3 inches. So I think the perfect size would be 39 or 40 mm.

I just want something as simple as possible that does not have extra stuff.

- Only three hands and I don't mind if the numbers are also missing.
- A watch with a metal or a leather strap.
- All colours are welcome except for gold or rose gold.
- Something that will last at least 5 years (I take good care of my things anyway)

My budget is < 90 € but I would really really want to stay below 60 €

It seems the simpler the watch the more expensive they are! I've seen some really hideous things in my price range that would be decent if they didn't have so much additions. I thought it was reasonable that the less stuff a watch has the cheaper it would b

Diamonds are too much.

If you have that money to spend, get yourself a submariner. It's absolutely iconic, and while divers aren't traditionally dress watches, the submariner has weaseled its way into the category over time.

Alternatively, you can probably find a vintage day date in gold for around that price if you know where to look. Really beautiful watches, instantly recognizable, but not too much.

http://www.watchrecon.com is a really useful website for looking at the resale market. You'll almost assuredly be able to find a better price there unless you know a jeweler/connection, just for the reason of having the ability to shop around.

Personally, I don't like the rhodium or the platinum dial options. I think they shy away from the dressier style you're looking for. The blue is pretty sharp though.

I think the Yacht Masters are definitely nice in their own right, but if I'm spending the money, I think I'd slide for something either iconic like the sub, or all together different. I mean, you could get a JLC Grande Reverso Calender for that money. That's what I'm putting away for now, so maybe I'm a little biased, but I think the YM is an underwhelming facet of the Rolex brand. The fact that you can get such a complex, in-house, Swiss made movement for that money doesn't make a good case for the YM in my book. The YM II is a different story though.

It looks like a lady's deVille. I can't recall ever seeing a gent's model with lugs like that, but I admit I don't have much experience with the deVille model.

Neat looking watch, but one thing you'll find with women's watches is that their value is almost exclusively as jewelry rather than as a watch. More gold and diamonds equals a higher value, rather than rarity of movement or model like with men's watches. If it's a quartz movement and the band is plated (and I assume both to be true) it probably isn't worth a whole lot compared to a man's auto of a similar design.

Take it with a grain of salt, I'm not a watch maker or anything, just an amateur watchfag.

Don't get a fake Rolex. You can get watches with absolutely great movements for that money. If you get a fake Rolex, odds are, you'll be stuck with some cheap Chinese movement that'll break in no time. They also tend to be pretty easy to spot, even if someone doesn't know a lot about Rolex.

You want an iconic watch with a great movement that'll last you a long time? Get a Seiko SKX for $250. Very recognizable watch with a great history and a solid movement.

You can also find other Seiko models around that price range that will do you good. Other brands include Tissot, Tag Heuer, Victronix, Frederique Constant, Longines, etc.

For a little more money, you can get a vintage Tudor, which is practically a Rolex with a different name on it (Tudor is a subsidiary of Rolex poised at being a more affordable wrist watch), or even go German with a Junghans (they make some really beautiful, minimalist watches worth checking out).

I mean, if you look in the right places, you can even find a vintage Rolex for around $2,000. Do yourself a favor and avoid getting a fake. It'll be money wasted, and it won't be as nearly satisfying as the experience you get with a real.

You aren't getting the prestige of Rolex.

A real Rolex looks and feels like it deserves the prestige it has. A fake Rolex looks and feels like you're trying to act richer than you are.

If you've ever actually held a real submariner, it is almost always instantly distinguishable as real. Weight wise, material wise, and detail wise, you simply won't find a fake, especially for your price range, that actually gives you a comparable experience to a Rolex. Aesthetically and functionally.

Save your money, and eventually purchase a real submariner. You'll be proud of yourself. For now, get a Seiko SKX. Literally anyone who cares about watches will recognize it instantly, and respect your choice.

If you want quarts, seiko, citizen, casio, are great choices. Although I am biased as a seiko/citizen/grand seiko fan. A great all around low maintenance watch is a Citizen eco-drive. Solar powered and accurate grab and go.

If you want to get into automatics, a Seiko diver like the SKX007 is an absolute classic/staple to any collection. Those are not solar powered so they need your daily wearing and movement to keep it powered and will need to be serviced regularly. There is a lot of charm in owning a mechanical watch but if you don't care and just want to know the time, go quartz. Best of luck

>This guy's never held a fake rolex. They're almost identical in weight.

Which fake?

For god's sake if you're going to attempt to sound like you know something at least try. There are fake Rolexes with a fucking quartz ticking movement sold everywhere.

It's actually pretty cumbersome to find the 1:1 level replica watches and a hassle to buy them. Get to the right forums, find the right sellers, go through the proper channels, do WU payments.. and even then there are variances between replica watch factories to account for if you want to be absolutely anal.

That said;
> The differences are so fucking subtle that only rolex owners are going to out you.

You can go to Rolex forums and look at replica watch threads. They started getting "scary accurate" only a few years ago, likely due to better factories and manufacturing processes coming to the Chinese black markets. It's now on a level of detail in the latest versions that experts can't tell them apart at all from the outside. Remember that this is like a game toward perfection. Every detail the experts point out is fixed in later revisions. Popular watch models like the Rolex Subs are on v7, v8 and the differences are on the order of micrometer spacing in lettering or the embossing thickness (again a cunt hair thickness) in indices.

Even worse, there are high end watch makers like Panerai who are above Rolex in pricing who ran headfirst into trouble since they did not use a custom movement for some of their models. This meant the Chinks just bought and modified standard ETA movements and these watches are basically poison pills on the market now because it's impossible to tell what's genuine even by experts taking them apart.

Just for reference:
>>The cyclops is usually fucked up and doesn't magnify 2.5x

This kind of problem was worked out years ago. You still see lesser quality replicas sold today because most people don't care enough to spend the extra to get 1:1.

>> No.12522119

>>12515904
>>find out that Quartz is considered the McDonalds of movements
>>suddenly disgusted with what is otherwise a nice watch

Fun fact:
When quartz first came on the scene mechanical watches started being considered garbage. They can't remotely compete with the reliability and ease of use of quartz. The service costs for automatics can be immense (and for cheaper versions it's essentially equal to just buying a new one).

This meant even high horology brands started putting out quartz versions. You can find gold Calatravas with a quartz movement.

Of course since quartz made watches cheap and reliable, mechanical watches had to become a luxury item. It's archaic and worse in every way. You don't buy one if you want to keep time.

As a bonus hardly anyone understands watches anymore. Even just wearing any watch is a bit odd even among people mid-30s. In short, nobody cares.

>you basically won't eer lose real money on it.

1) Inflation. To not lose money the watch needs to reliably increase in value.
2) Service costs. Your watch takes a ~10% of cost service fee hit every 3-5 years (recommended) or 5-8 years (if you're trying to cheapskate).
3) Are you buying it new? Expect 10-15% depreciation the moment you take off that plastic protective band, at which point it goes from BNIB to used.
4) Are you planning on using it? Any accidental damage could mean losses of thousands of dollars even if it's "just cosmetic".
5) Unexpected changing tastes. This is probably the most volatile time to buy a luxury watch. The entire industry is struggling, at the same point Rolexes in particular cost the most they ever have historically (compared to the average salary). You are extremely vulnerable to huge losses within 10-20 years, even from something as mundane as changing tastes. Imagine having bought a quartz Rolex when that was the rising star of horology.

In short, this "won't lose money" crap is a line they feed to so you justify the extreme money. Nobody cares if it's true as long as you, the punter, has paid up.

The people making reliable money are talented flippers. People with more than one watch rarely buy new at all, as they know the initial hit in depreciation is the worst. That game is for chumps. More than any time previously new buyers should beware the looming hazards facing the industry; identical replicas and a death spiral of a lack of watch wearers. The smartwatches are also eating into the market.

People with big collections are looking to divest right now, not invest.
