i agree about the prejudice, i never had the original so i can't speak for it but there are a lot of crybabies who follow the anti-hype around it.
i would also agree with your comment about most people expect more out of it from just the general scent character, when i spray the one EDP straight out of the bottle, it smells very heavy, deep and rich and the longevity isn't indicative of this at all

Honestly. Higher end shops still give out samples in the US. You used to be able to write frag reps and they'd mail you samples. I actually called the local Barney's, talked to their Creed person and she mailed me a bunch of samples ffs. This new philosophy of charging for samples is BS.

>> No.12450759

>>12450730
My guess is that the houses are caught in a difficult position. If they give away samples to interested parties, that policy is abused by a few hundred or thousand people who sell them on eBay. If they offer comprehensive sampler packs/rebates, it damages their relationships with retailers who rely on exclusivity and controlled distribution for foot traffic. So, I get it. I don't like it, but I get it. It's just frustrating as hell since retailers almost never carry a house's entire line. It's like shopping for music in the pre-internet years.

Sorry, 4-5 sprays is probably fine if one of those is under your shirt. If you're worried spray less. I spray 2-3, 1 if I'm wearing something like Black Orchid on a night in. No one on the internet can give you the tailored advice you want on this subject, so yes, ask your mom what she thinks.

It usually does, though. Not always, there are definitely frags that are horridly overpriced, but niche fragrances do tend to be more unique and use higher quality ingredients.

In my experience, even the best designer frags, and there are some I like a lot, aren't anywhere near as interesting as good niche frags.

I asked the first one - sorry it was kind of dumb and thanks for the answer. Just wanted to know if there is some way to "cleanse the palate" to help check if the fragrance is actually wearing off or you just can;t smell it anymore even though it's still projecting?

MIP is pretty well known here, actually. I have bottles of both the EDP and EDT, myself. Personally, it's nothing special to me, I mostly just got my two bottles because it was nice enough that I might want to wear it on occasion, and it's been discontinued.

In my experience, the only frags I've ever been really blown away by have been higher-end niche stuff. Like, there are ones I smell and I'm like, "hey, that's really nice, I might pick that up", but only things like Roja Enigma have made me be like "holy shit! this is the best thing I've ever smelled!".

Granted. The thing you are really paying for is exclusivity. Nothing wrong with that, but

Yea I'm aware MiP is popular in the online frag community, hence why we all have bottles of it. That's very different from the real world where 99.9% of people I come in contact with have only ever heard of Acqua di Gio and maybe Bleu de Chanel cause they've seen it on a bus stop ad. Also I disagree and think that it's actually quite exceptional - and going back to the original point of the discussion - it's even more exceptional when you consider how little it cost.

>> No.12453509

>>12453476
>"holy shit! this is the best thing I've ever smelled!"
And of course you didn't know the name or price tag of the frag before you came to that conclusion. And if you did, it of course had zero influence on your opinion.

I'm not picking on you per se, just the concept that price=quality. Confirmation bias is a tough one to shake. Nobody wants to think they paid too much for something, so it's easy to be influenced by the price tag or prestigious label. Luxury houses rely on it.

I'd love to do a blind taste test of niche and designer stuff with some fragheads. The only problem would be people recognizing scents...

>> No.12453513

Is this where I can pop in to a conversation that doesn't concern me to say no one would care about MIP if not for the evocative name and beautiful bottle? It is a pleasant perfume, but that's as far as it goes imo.

>> No.12453525

>>12453513
Come on in anon. I happen to disagree... kind of. I for one find the name to be offputting. Seems a little cheesy to me, and the way the fragrance smells doesn't really match the name imo. And to me the bottle design is just icing on the cake. Yes I like it, but would I still wear it if the bottle were different? Yep

>> No.12453527

>>12453509
Well, that's the trick, I guess. If you're in the position where you're going to be sampling relatively obscure frags, then you already must have some knowledge, and if you have some knowledge, then you're probably aware that those particular frags are quite expensive. It's really extremely unlikely to buy something like a Roja frag without knowing what it is.

So you certainly do have a point, confirmation bias I'm sure does exist and it's very hard to say whether I love it because I love how it smells or because I think I should love it because of how much I paid. All I know is I love it.

I do think most fragheads would be able to pick out a niche frag from a designer frag, though. Designer frags, by design, tend to be much more simplistic, much more crowd pleasing. Again, I like some designer frags. Just in my personal opinion, I prefer niche overall because they're different. They aren't all crowd pleasing, easily wearable scents. That just makes them more... I guess "magical" to me, y'know?

>> No.12453530

Fragrance Bros sort of did that early on when Jer was still in the videos. They'd do "shootouts" with similar frags. Coolwater vs GIT, Aventus vs clones, etc. and smell them blind to see if they can identify which was which.

I agree that it'd be fun to put people's noses to the test without knowing what they were smelling though.

Yeah, I do as well, actually. I have a bunch of cheapies I wear to sleep or just around the house, I have some designer frags like Spicebomb and Eros that I rather like and wear sometimes when I go out.

To me, niche fragrances are just a bit more of a special experience. There's a really nice specialty store here in Toronto that carries only niche frags. They only carry about 15 brands or so, and Amouage is about as close as they have to "mainstream". They have a bunch of brands I've never heard of. The store itself is very interesting, they just have little tables out with all these fancy bottles on them, and the lady that runs the place is very friendly and very knowledgable. It's a really cool experience just going there and sampling some of the exotic fragrances they have. They are, of course, rather expensive, so I don't buy that often, but they know me there and they know I do make big purchases on occasion, and they're very generous with the samples.

For me, that's just a much more interesting day out than going to a department store and testing the latest Dior Homme flanker or whatever, y'know?

Le Male has about 65 flankers so you could check those out.

You could also look for other stuff by Francis Kurkdjian, who has his own (very expensive) niche house. I've never really been that into his work, LM included, but it seems I'm an anomaly.

Quick question, I'm testing a theory: do you smoke?

Tobacco is one of the main accords in London, smells a bit like a fresh (not smokey) pack of cigarettes. I don't smoke but I love that smell and London. I have a friend who smokes and can't detect any smell from his unlit cigarettes at all. So maybe it creates a blind spot. And if you take that out of I'm not sure what you're left with.

Yeah I don't get fabric or berries....your nose might have been affected by smoking or something. Or your skin chemistry is weird.

It's way too strong. It's still a good masculine smell though, for guys like 25-30 yr old.

Don't overspray too much of it especially in the morning, it will stay on your skin for like the whole day.

Only do 2-3 sprays on your spots, but dont do like 10 sprays because it will smell way too overpowering for people.

Just my advice, I have bad experience with this cologne. I actually made people around me nauseous and sick with the smell for like the whole day at an office.

As far as advertising, yeah, BO is aimed at women. In practice, department stores have a bottle of BO at both the women's and men's fragrance counters. I get your point about it smelling traditionally feminine in that sweet/fruit/floral things have been embedded with that connotation over the years. Plenty of people share your opinion, as any cursory skim of reviews will attest. But in the gourmand era, Hypnotic Poison is more "masculine" than half the things young men are wearing, and that's sold in a sensuous glass apple.

For me, BO is just a step to the side from Tom Ford's unisex-labeled Plum Japonais, Noir de Noir, and Tuscan Leather. The florals are just more pronounced.

But that's just my opinion man. I like Dior Addict too.
