You start small and move from there.
Only invest as much as you want to get out of it.

First step for you sounds like going through your clothes and finding things that you lack (eg jacket) or don't fit you. Make a list of things you need to have a complete outfit or two.

After that you need to figure out what colors work best on you, which usually depends on your skin tone. Google will answer that for you.

Next figure out what size you ought to be wearing. I find it useful to take down all your measurements in inches and centimeters as a reference. When in doubt go to a store (any basic shop will do) and just try on different sizes of stuff. Find clothes that fit slim and accentuate the human form (It's possible to look good in oversized shit but that's requires advanced knowledge). Think slim tees and slim but not skinny jeans to start.

Then figure out what kinda features you want from each piece of clothing (eg waterproof, pockets, boots, sneakers). In general it's easier to make simple pieces look good. Go for a solid color shirt instead of a graphic tee. Get plain jeans instead of distressed.

Well fitting clothes that work with your body in cut and color will get you 75% of the way there. You can wear a tee shirt, jeans, and sneakers and still look pretty good if you run through the steps above.

Thanks, that was my first impression judging just by the pictures alone as well.
I currently run a three year old pair of black Adidas whatevers, and they've held up very well considering the heavy use I put them through every day, so another pair from the same brand sounds like a safe bet in terms of durability.

I'm going with sneakers because I know I'll be using them for literally everything and they're just so damn versatile (I don't even wear boots in winter unless the snow gets really bad, hence my choice of the more water resistant leather tops of both of these shoes).

When it's actually done the soles won't look as flat/thin, the tape just isn't actually covering all of it

Tapering + tight thigh cut like you said. Tuck it into the boot and then let motion do the rest of the work. As you sit and move it'll bunch up on its own but with the boots laced tight the hem at the bottom won't come out of the boot.
