Whatever you do, don't use Rit dye. Also as >>12078551 said, unless you have like a big bin or some shit to evenly dip the shirt in, then it won't look as nice as Raf's version.
I tried doing with a $1.50 sweater from the thrift and a box of Rit as an experiment, and the dye crept up while it was drying which made the transition really fucked up. Not to mention even though the dye was labeled as navy blue, it came out almost lavender once it dried.
