I helped my husband go from 140-ish at 6' 1" to 185 over 3 years. He used to do a LOT of distance running almost every day (like a short run was 8+ miles and many runs were 16+ miles, if I recall) plus push ups and core work so he looked like a skeleton with pecs and skinny but defined arms. He switched to light cardio and heavy lifting and put on 45lbs.

I would recommend a simple 5x5 like SS to start out. Also, make sure you're eating enough.

For big family meals I just stick to plain meats and vegetable side dishes in small portions. I think most families (unless fullblown amerifat) will be impressed if you explain you're sticking to your diet.
