First coat is a goretex shell flannel-lined parka, this thing is fucking awesome and it had the corresponding half off tag at salvation army so i got it for 6 bucks, which was an absolute motherfucking steal

Second is a wool-lined barn coat, pinstriped with a navy blue corduroy contrast collar, 11 bucks

Third I got several years ago and they are returning in popularity so i figured i'd post, this was like 11 or 12 dollars

4th is a nike ACG gore-tex jacket, usually wear it for running in the colder months as it is more on the fitted side.

And here are a couple more sweaters i've copped. 2nd one is actually a colorblock Margaret Howell which was an absolute fucking grail for me.

I must say, i've found that thrifting stuff like what i've posted is much easier if you're on the taller side. I'm 6'6" and the majority of my shorter friends struggle to find cool shit that's not at least a large or XL.

If anyone wants to see what any of this shit looks like on a person lemme know! Hope some of my cops have inspired those of you to keep thrifting or to check out thrift stores if you haven't! If you have Salvation Army family stores in your area, fucking take advantage of those, as that's where i get the majority of my stuff.

Appreciate it, all!

I live in northern Illinois, about an hour and a half northwest of Chicago.

Yeah i can't imagine you'd be able to find a surplus of these kinds of garments in California. If you ever go up north into Oregon or Washington i would definitely check out some thrift shops though! Likewise if you ever visit the midwest or the northeastern coast.

What websites do you frequent for thrifts? Etsy tends to have decent stuff but it's all ludicrously overpriced. The midwest is a fucking gold-mine and im definitely spoiled so when i see like a sherpa on etsy (something that pops up in my local SalVo for $6-10 every other week) get bought for upwards of 80$ i just feel bad for the sorry bastard who got royally fleeced.

Been thrifting for a while (7+ years) and it really depends on what your price point is and what you're looking for. In general, you pay a combination of time and money. The more you spend on one side, the less you spend on the other.

If you want to find possibly higher-end/designer stuff that will likely fit and not have issues then go consignment. Also if you don't want to spend a lot of time rooting through clothes.

Going to vintage malls and specialty antique stores is great for finding valuable/high-quality items and respected labels but you'll usually pay top dollar for them.

But if you're low on cash and want to find cheap/offbeat/vintage stuff (and you don't mind going through a lot of them to find the right stuff) then a bigger store is your better bet.

What's fun is that if it's a local store or a 'buy clothing' store the cashiers will cluelessly price something really low. Old ladies at charity thrift shops know their traditional brands but not modern ones. Go to a Plato's Closet and it's the reverse with the teenagers hired since they know about trendy brands. Found a pair of Born oxfords at a Plato's for $15, kek

Chain thrift stores are generally more reliable than local ones since they usually aren't limited to a local supply of clothes (the Salvation Army I worked at over the summer recieved incoming donations), but they tend to price things more 'accurately' so you're going to pay more in general. Also what's worth noting is that in secondhand stores, there's usually a flaw that got the clothes there in the first place, which can be a dealbreaker if you can't sew or get blemishes out.

Garage/estate sales are really nice, because they're priced lower to get rid of unwanted stuff, and the stuff that's sold is usually in decent condition as a result. Also, you can haggle!

Like 75% of my wardrobe is thrifted. I'm in the process of setting up an Etsy store and I'll post some pics of good finds if the thread's still up

Also, AMA

Multiple ways of going about it. Depends on what your style dictates on, really.

A lot of thrifting is one of two categories, in my opinion: finding high-end pieces for cheaper or using the cheapness of thrifting to wear oddball or ironic stuff. Basically the differences between >>11878545
and >>11870438 but they can overlap, especially when you've got current trends syncing up with vintage styles.

That said, here are some tips while thrifting:

>Know what you generally want before going to a thrift store. The super low prices on stuff might convince you to get something, but if you don't really like it you'll never wear it.
>Wear clothing that either matches what you'll be looking for or is versatile/bland enough to match anything. If you're looking for shoes, for instance, wear socks. And if you're looking for dress shirts, don't wear sweatpants.
>If you're on the fence about something, hang on to it. You might come back in a couple days or hours and it'll be gone.
>TRY ON EVERYTHING if you can. Sizing for thrift stores is everywhere, and especially with older items sizes can be way different than they are now.
>Don't be afraid to look in other sections as well, in large stores especially it's often guesswork as to if something is meant for women, men, or boys. If it looks good, nobody will know. (This works for some types of clothing better than others, though.)
>Interesting materials and shapes are cool, but if they're too uncomfortable
>Small defects can often be fixed! Minor rips and tears, missing buttons and bad fits can often be tuned if you know your way around a sewing machine or know someone who does. Heck, if something's really nice it could be worth a trip to a tailor.
>Similarly, altering something can often be a good way to update it. Be flexible in how you look at something and know your wardrobe. If you already can think of ideas, it's a good sign.

It's not hard. I'll show you.
>go to thrift store
>look through the racks
>find something appealing to you
>make sure it's in decent condition before trying it on
>buy it if it fits and looks good

It's not rocket science. Go to all the thrift stores you can. It's not entirely accurate to say that the nicer clothes will be at the stores near nicer neighborhoods because shit gets picked over everywhere and stores share stock. I've found some of the nicest shit at the run-down places. One of my favorite shops is in the ghetto.

Also it's important to make sure something is in good condition before trying it on so that you don't get depressed when you find something that you think is nice only to discover after putting it on that it smells like shit/has holes or stains/etc.

Value is up to your research and understanding of brands. If you're talking resale value, search sold listings on eBay and organize them by recently sold (not currently listed unless you want to see if the same item is listed cheaper by someone).

Good luck friend.

Value in my opinion is in the eye of the beholder, however there are some tells for if something if legitimately vintage.
>Embroidered labels or papery tear-away labels are a good sign a shirt's vintage. For merchandise shirts, check any copyright years.
>Generally, there will be less artificial materials used, or if there are very specific ones that were a fad, that could also be a giveaway.
>Bulky screenprinting or decorative embroidery are a good sign. You might even find a shirt with a custom iron-on, pic related.
>Defunct clothing brands, alternatively an old-looking piece with a venerated brand.
>A generic label on a piece of clothing most likely means that it's a custom, maybe one-of-a-kind. These kinds of things are admittedly a weakness of mine.
>Smaller than normal sizes are also a good giveaway, since generally people were smaller back then

For styling with vintage items, it's often a matter of keeping the tone consistent, and not going overboard with a specific look or it can look costumey. If you already know the basics of dressing well, you'll likely be fine.

Really, for me thrifting's a hobby, and I mostly like the uniqueness of what I can find. A lot of the stuff I'm reselling is stuff that I've had that I don't wear anymore, but is in good condition to find a new home.
But finding expensive/high quality things for cheap is also a great reason to thrift. Hope this has helped!

Good guide friend. I particularly resonate with the reselling after using part. I used thrifting as an excuse to indulge my shopping habits while losing weight, as well as an introduction to fashion. I'd seek out nicer brand clothes that I normally couldn't afford so that I could enjoy them for a while, then when they're too big, sell them for a profit. Once of my best ideas yet desu.

You'll naturally get a feel for quality as you handle garments. Look for things like straight stitching that isn't fraying, 100% wool/cashmere/etc. instead of blends (unless it's a technical blend, it's usually done to save money), and trusted name brands (just do our research around these parts. The flannels I mentioned are good companies for flannels and other Americana/workwear.)

Shoes are really a gamble, but less of a big deal than some people make. You can buy cleaners to flush out any potential bad things (mold and disease mainly), but just look at the shoe. If it's in good shape, then the owner was probably a decently clean person. I've never had a problem buying used shoes since I'd only get ones that still looked good/didn't smell like shit.

I live in Alameda. I hit the thrifts every weekend and come up on cool shit all the time, you just suck ass at looking.

Salvation Army on Park St. is my #1 go-to, great selection there, there's also a Goodwill close by.

Over in Oakland you've got a Goodwill on International Blvd, haven't gotten a lot of cool stuff there but it's worth checking out. There's another Salvation Army I go to in Chinatown, also pretty good. There's a Goodwill on Broadway and one on MacArthur, though I haven't really been to those. There's an Out of the Closet near Lake Merritt if I remember correctly.

I picked these >>11885296 up in San Leandro yesterday which is close to Alameda, it was my first time visiting the thrifts there. There's a Goodwill and a Thrift Town not too far from each other; the TT has a really big inventory.

Berkeley has a fuckton of secondhand stores, I go to school there and hit up the Goodwill on University pretty frequently. Not a huge selection but I always find really nice cops at that place. There's a Buffalo Exchange on Telegraph, cool stuff but the prices are pretty high. Also a really cool little surplus store on San Pablo Ave, I go there all the time.

If you're really committed you can head over to SF and look at the thrifts there, I haven't spent too much time thrifting in the city but I'd be surprised if you couldn't come up on some cool things.

There's your brief guide to thrifting in the East Bay, stop complaining how this place is dead when it really isn't. Now go forth and buy cool shit.
