I see these types of fits throughout NYC, though they were just as select in my time in Nippo as well. Female and male, it's a style that suits a certain mindset, not a standard of fashion.

Similiarly on the Muji plebcore, I loved the store in Nippo just as much as I did here, despite having access to the comfycore source, I felt good in solidquality, minimal basics that Muji (and regional varieties) provides. As most say, it's Nippo Ikea, nothing more or less, but something I enjoy for that simplicity. Suprised the mujipasta hasn't been brought out.

I'm the person who said Muji was the Wal-Mart of Japan. I'll explain what I mean by that but first off I just want to stress that that wasn't the main take-away of my post. All I was really meant to say was that Muji in Asia/Japan DOES NOT sell anything that could be considered comfycore for men. A few posts ITT seemed to indicate that Muji and Uniqlo in Asia are comfycore central, which they ain't. For women, Muji has more interesting pieces, but their men's pieces tend to run extra small, and in fact their button-ups are probably the absolute shortest button-ups you will find anywhere, period, which is the antithesis of comfycore.

Now to explain the Wal-Mart comparison.

I wouldn't call Muji the Ikea of Japan because Ikea is the Ikea of Japan. They are similar in "minimalism" though the comparisons end there (and I would argue that Ikea isn't that minimalist compared to Muji).

What makes Muji similar to Wal-Mart is the business model: the cheapest, lowest quality goods at the lowest possible prices.

Now Muji actually fails at this internationally, because although their products are made in China, they're packaged in Japan. That means customers outside of Japan pay a huge markup. You may think you're paying for quality, but you're really paying double the usual import/export overhead (I've researched this, look it up). In Japan, however, it is the absolutely cheapest option in the country.

I'm telling you from experience, as an American, it's easy to take Wal-Mart for granted. But when you're expat, you need some random thing, you need it cheap, and you need it late at night, you start asking yourself "where's the Wal-Mart in this bitch." And when you're in Japan, that place is Muji, hands down. It ain't quality, It ain't high fashion, and it sure as shit ain't comfycore. Stay mad. I'm out.

>Muji more minimalist than IKEA.
They are distinctly different types of minimalism one being scandinavian minimalism vs japanese minimalism. Saying one 'is more' minimalist is an empty unfounded statement.

>muji is too short for comfycore
Comfycore does not mean 'long', i'd argue it is more about the overall width and flow of the piece. And muji does deliver on that. While i agree that their pieces are shorter than others, they are quite wide and can be still comfy.
Comfy does NOT mean oversized necessarily. It means wider than standard western standard.

>mark up theory.
Proof needed.

>muji aint comfycore.
Sure. They mainly produce basics.
Nobody goes around clad in pure muji or uniqlo. They make good basic pieces which in Asia at least adhere to japanese minimalist sensibilities.
Nobody ever said that they are pure comfycore.

This whole argument on all sides is essentially semantics, but I can at least confirm buttdevestated anon is right on markup, as I've shopped both in Muji jp and in US.

I wouldn't consider myself knowledgeable in any sense, but look into the outdoor/lifestyle brands (see: my love affair with Go Out mag) that all work around 'camp vibes, relaxed vibes, outdoor life' and leads to some really comfy styles, with or without functional/technical uses for camping/hiking

I agree that the muji argument is mainly semantics. Let's leave it at that.
>They produce some nice basics and are nice to browse in - nothing more, nothing less.

Muji outside of Japan indeed is quite expensive outside Japan and mostly not worth the price.
>A plain white muji t-shirt can cost up to the equivalent of EUR40, which clearly is very expensive. (still THE most comfortable t-shirt I have ever worn).
The mark up clearly makes sense considering the international prices.

What a load of bull.

>you need some random thing, you need it cheap, and you need it late at night, you start asking yourself "where's the Wal-Mart in this bitch." And when you're in Japan, that place is Muji, hands down.

What the fuck are you even on about lmfao
Muji closes at 9.
They sell mostly interior, kitchenware, stationery. How many times does someone need like a fucking plate late at night?
Their clothing line is a tiny part of their business.

Wal-Mart is mainly a supermarket, you go there to do groceries. Muji sells a few prepackaged meals and snacks that are no cheaper than at a convenience store (which, due to their presence at every single street corner in Japan and being 24/7 make them the obvious place to go if you ever need anything late at night).

If you want to ignore Aeon and find something in Japan that could possibly be a Wal-Mart tier experience then you'd maybe think of going to Donki. They have an actual foods section, pharmacy, clothes, stationery, electronics, whatever the fuck you want. And they offer it at cheap prices and have the fitting trashy clientele.

Basically what I mean is Ikea has more options. Muji is more utilitarian. Like if you want a wastebasket, they have white and off-white.

>Comfycore does not mean 'long', i'd argue it is more about the overall width and flow of the piece. And muji does deliver on that.
I'll concede on that point. You'd have to be pretty small as I'm an S and I've had to size up to M just to try on Muji which even still left no room for any kinda shrinkage whatsoever. So we're talking S -> L for any kinda roominess, and I don't know if Muji carries XL+.

7/11 in Japan stocks Muji tho.

Most Wal-Mart where I'm from (Nor Cal) don't have groceries. Those are the super Wal-Marts.

I ignore Aeon (and A-Mart and RT-Mart and Carrefour (not Asian, but popular in Asia)) because although they look and feel like Wal-Mart, they don't sell at those low low prices at razorthin profits putting moms and pops out of business making Walton family money, feel me? You don't really save money shopping there over the local grocery store or family owned furniture store, so they don't really fill the same niche that Wal-Mart and Muji do.

Anything shown in Japanese magazines is generally sold out on the day the mag hits newsstands
You can always check Begin's Beams page, At-Scelta's magazine search section, Takarajimasha's webstore, or Go Out's webstore to hope your size is available, but they must only have like 10 of each because the speed at which stuff sells out is unreal
