I'm moving out of my childhood home and into true adulthood the first of September. Let's get an interior design thread going!
Going to share the apartment with two friends, but we'll all have each our room. Especially realistic inspo (something that's not out of a 5 star hotel or celebrity mansion). But hey, that's cool too.

Interior design inspo.

>> No.11583229

Paint one wall with some color and only one. Keep other white.

Buy rugs and a good set of somewhat heavy curtains, lot of young people forget these and it makea the rooms seem little off.

And do not buy from IKEA, the designs are made for flat shipping in mind, not how they look in homes. Also very poor and disgusting materials.

Buy used furniture made of real wood. You can sand them and paint or oil in milloin ways and the look 1000x better than melamine processed vomit covered in plastic.

Keep going, this is amazing. My plan was already to only use IKEA for basic shit like cutlery, towels etc - furniture I'd try to find used.

All walls are already white and my room comes with a good balcony and window.

But furniture made of particle board is easier to carry around and has other benefits. Every material have pros and cons, quit this fedora mindset that le real wood is the only acceptable choice. People in the past used hard wood because it was the only option, depending on the application they would accept particle board too if available at that time.

>> No.11583278

>>11583242
Used furniture usually looks good because of the furniture looks worn, not because of some "particle board a shit" reason.

If you are looking for cheap stuff that looks nice, you are probably best lurking verge side pickup / local websites / markets and grabbing cheap stuff that you can sand/oil/varnish/etc yourself.

If you prefer mid century, then there is a lot of cheap reproductions out there, I know even Ikea make some that look nice (I've seen varnished/stained Ikea stuff in tons of interior design magazines) - the thing about mid century is that ply and pipe and plastic were pretty popular and now they are cheap.

I dump my inspo to fb so I have none for you.

Seconding this IKEA chat. I still have some IKEA pieces kicking around my apartment from fuckin' college (nearly 10 years ago) that look pristine. We're talking like $5 side tables and junk like that. It's obviously not gonna last a lifetime, but considering the longevity and the ultra-low price point, I really can't complain.

I've only had issues with larger ikea pieces made from particle board. Bookshelves and wardrobes have essentially fallen apart over the years. Granted, I've moved like 5 times with them. I still have ikea shit from when I was in HS, but they're made from wood. Those have held up just as well as anything else.

My issue with ikea has just been that I almost never like anything there, but it's cheap and I'll be tempted to buy it anyway. I only own a set of shelves that I actually like, the rest were always just because I needed a new closet/night table/tv stand and they has dirt cheap ones that weren't hideous.

If you have a big cooking supplies store around you should check there instead of ikea, they are usually on the cheaper side and they have a lot of hotel/restaurant grade stuff (businesses dont usually want to spend a lot)

If you are actually in to this kind of stuff just get some cheap/free furniture and beat on it however sounds good.

Depending on the style you are after badly waxed tables might fit right in.

There's nothing too hard about furniture. People make a big deal about perfection but if you are finishing pieces for yourself then imperfection usually looks better.

Yeah, /diy/ is pretty good. There are books on the subject, a ton on YT, etc.

Oh, that's totally 100% true. An ex of mine had one of their wardrobes, and it was such utter trash she broke it by opening a drawer.

I'm honestly not in love with their designs either. Their simple stuff works well, but their fancier stuff somehow almost invariably skews ugly. Way too much plastic in some of their stuff.

Nice dubs, Bateman.
I'm planning on buying a bunch of IKEA stuff v since I'm (hopefully) moving into a new apartment. The thing is, I don't want any wood furniture. I prefer metal, glass, and plastics.
So if I'm not getting wood furniture from IKEA is it even worth it to get it from there?

>> No.11591834

>>11591797
>So if I'm not getting wood furniture from IKEA is it even worth it to get it from there?
In terms of quality? I've honestly never seen an issue with the metal/glass stuff, as that tends to be more expensive/thoughtful anyway.

The plastics are hit-and-miss. Case in point, I have a few cheapie storage containers from IKEA that'd probably fall apart if I looked at them for too long.

My personal rule of thumb: never buy anything with drawers from IKEA, and be very careful about their storage/organizational gear. Everything else is worth at least checking out in person.
