it's got some good action sequences and some cool mech designs, but it's 90% psychological wankery about terrible, unlikable, repulsive characters and several episodes are made mostly of still frames and stock footage.

Is there an anime that actually has strong storytelling and decent character development without a bunch of shit-tier Jap cliches? I've tried to watch most of the anime films/series touted as "masterpieces" but have never been too impressed.

The only anime which didn't feel like a waste of time to me was Akira, which I enjoyed DESPITE the plot, not because of it. Not trying to be a dick here or write off all anime, just looking for suggestions
