I lost a lot of weight and it's summer sales so it's time to buy new shirts.

What are the essentials I shouldn't miss /fa/?

I'll definitely get a plain white, a plain light blue and a lightly patterned light blue, but where do I go from there?
I currently only have a dark blue suit that fits me, which I recently bought for a wedding, and I'm afraid if I buy a shirt with pink or a purple pattern I'll also need to buy a beige or grey suit, is that true?

I'm not very experienced with these things

I'd personally go for like 5 white shirts (different collars and materials), 5 light blue shirts (same here), 1-2 striped ones (white/blue, white/grey/, white/purple etc.) and a dark blue one.

That's all you'll ever need. Considering you only have one suit so far, those are the colours you want to work with. If you'd start buying some more 'unusual' suits, you can start experimenting with other shirts.

But I spend most days in the office without wearing a jacket or a tie, so aren't all plain shirts a bit too plain?

There shirt is the background, the tie is the decoration. Keep the shirt plain. Light blue is best, White is ok if you need to be more formal. Light blue is better if you are younger.

You can pretty much wear the same suit and light blue type shirt every day and just vary the tie and no one will notice.

As do I, but I don't see anything wrong with plain colour shirts. They often look the best anyway, especially light blue ones.

If you want something more "fun", checkered ones (glencheck, gingham etc) are quite nice.

No. Plain is best.

OK plain it is then

I also have another problem, I need to refresh my casual wardrobe too and I feel like I've outgrown jeans and a t-shirt but I don't know where to go from that.
I find polo shirts hideous, am I wrong?

Chinos, wool/cotton/flannel trousers etc. with a shirt and sweater for the colder days and you're pretty much good to go.

Yes, polo shirts are disgusting. Popover shirts are good though, especially if you don't want to come across too formal.

How the hell does one outgrow jeans and tshirts?

I don't know I probably feel that way because my t-shirts no longer fit well, I'll definitely buy new ones

But when I go for a night out with friends I sometimes feel that it doesn't cut it
