Also, in Hard boiled wonderland, did anyone else enjoy the modern narrative half but find the other surreal part, although essential, less gripping?

>He thinks experimental movies are effay
Except out of ~10 listed, only 2 were experimental: harun farocki and chris marker.

They're definitely fashionable to like today. Another example would be Akerman after her death this year rekindled interest. Liking them signals intelligent taste, avoidance of shallow trendiness but connection to an overall zietgeist. To any decently mature artistic community at least, i.e. it won't work at college film club, but would at any hip gallery opening.

They're not my personal taste. With experimental/non-narrative, I like Walter de Maria or Matta-Clark's films, or maybe Tscherkassky. But they're not fashionable, except when worn as a personal brand

Just read Japanese postwar lit. Ryu Murakami & Osamu Dazai (Specifically his No Longer Human) are accessible for h. murakami babbies. Yukio Mishima and Kenzaburo Oe are more important writers of the period.

Anyone that's read h. marukami and stopped flat there is either braindead or poser af, ryu murakami isn't really that tough a followup. Only excusable for 16 year olds and younger.

I've read a bunch of shit lately and man am I over it. I feel like I just keep falling for the bait. How do I keep getting sucked into highschool tier bullshit.

Things I've recently read: a gross amount of murakami (wind, pinball, dance, windup bird, 1Q84, colorless, sheep, and probably more... i dont know why I didnt stop. The dude has interesting ideas but just kind of slathers them in the same fashion over and over), the steve jobs biography (it was a gift, actually kind of interesting to read about a genius adult who cant control his emotions and is really dense when it comes to health), capitalist realism (just a book about capitalism and how its a wheel that just turns itself into oblivion), breakfast of champions by vonnegut (not much to say here, probably not the vonnegut book to start with but it was a buck. I thought this was along the same lines of murakami), and last but not least 'consider the lobster' by DFW (man this was a bummer. I tried to like it, I did but DFW has 1 style and it just wears on you. I feel like he is writing more for himself than for an audience sometimes).

Things I own I don't really plan on reading: the gay science (yeah idk dudes, it was at a used book store. Is this worth reading, should I do it with notes such as stanfords phil encyclopedia), marie kondos book of magic - throw away stuff(I read 15 pages of this book and put it down. if you have to be sold on minimalism with magic bullshit intertwined in it, its probably not for you), selling crack in el barrio (a rec from a friend, again highschool tier and probably a 1 day read), and a girl with a dragon tattoo.

Where do I start!? Fiction is tight. Non-fiction is also cool if it is interesting. I keep getting sucked into these bullshit 'thinkers' that do all the thinking for you or lack any sort of coming together or conclusion (hey there murakami). Looking for pretty much anything. I'll admit I'm not ~above any of these, they just leave something to be desired in my eyes.

for more japanese. try ryu murakami.

if you want more pomo, don delillo is solid. pynchon is light reading and 2bh not much of a writer at all but v strong, on target humor. john barth is an amazing writer with the sharpest sense of humor ever.

italo calvino is really refreshing. wg sebald is up there with barth, easily one of the very best contemporary authors, melancholy tone. thomas bernhard is fun too - bitter.

for non fic, avoid the pop shit you find in B&N. try manuel delanda if crit theory & cyber shit interests you.

Just because a film follows the style of the time it was created, doesn't make it automatically pandering. I can tell you know nothing about film, as you would have been able to recognize the French New-Wave influences in the film's aesthetics instead of chalking it up to "consumer-pandering". 'Submarine' is filmed as if it was filmed by its main character. The art-style seems suited to a hopeless-romantic 15-year-old, precisely because we're seeing the events of the film through the perspective of a hopeless-romantic 15-year-old.

I don't even know why I'm replying to you. You've probably not even seen the film, and you don't even care enough about it to articulate your opinion with any kind of justification. You're just using this as an oppurtunity to feel slightly better about yourself by shitting all over other people. It's threads likes this, and posters like you, who make me realize that I'm getting too old for 4chan and all this bullshit. The amount of hours I've wasted on this bullshit we call "discussion". We're both just arguing with a brick wall, neither of us will leave this thread with a different opinion.

Maybe one day I'll find someone worth talking to about film/fashion/literature/whatever. Until that time, though, all I have is you arseholes.

yea, throw out stranger.

of human bondage, crime & punishment and stoner are good books, but they're older literary classics (well stoner was 'rediscovered'), you might have trouble enjoying them without some familiarity with the period's context in terms of literature.

inherent vice is by pynchon, it's okay as far as he goes and nice to start with, but gravity's rainbow is much better and an easy start to. look up the settings to both and decide which aesthetic appeals to you more, since pynchon's mo is just basically a satirical, ultra poser barrage of all the consumer and media/art identifications that makes up a period and culture.

& I'd highly rec confessions of a mask over spring snow as a start to mishima. it's his first novel and autobiographical, covering the background to the themes that are present in his work and life. spring snow is the first party of his final trilogy of novels.

idk it sounds like you have tried post-modernism but didnt like it so much. Try 'the crying of lot 49' by pynchon. if you dont like that, stick to the modernist classics.

i recommend the gay science but read some basics first camus / sarte and difinetly some plato.

read 'good old neon' by DFW too. its his best work outside of infinite jest.

what is up with all of you faggots being in love with La Haine?

I wish i was a non-french and was fascinated by those french things - Claude Lelouche, Brigitte Bardot, French new wave, Alain Delon...
But la Haine? At the best, it was a good movie (it's already a compliment, coming from me). It's not effay though.
Or maybe there is a fascination because of the atmosphere of the arab suburbs, and I can't feel it because what the film shows is the actual everyday life.
The film maker could have filmed a street in Boulogne-Billancourt or Tremblay-en-France for 2 hourts straight. He invented nothing.
