Why the fuck do people care if watches are manual, automatic, or Quartz movement.

I obviously get that for enthusiasts craftsmanship is their fetish and they get off to watch detailed construction. That said I don't get why quartz watches are seen as terrible and shameful.

I want to get a Shinola watch because I love the look but all the enthusiasts I've seen online shit all over shinola for being overpriced. I'm not doubting that Shinola has a luxury mark up, but how are they any different than any fashion brand? Are watch enthusiasts just plebs that buy the rest of their clothes from Walmart because it's a "good deal?"

Shinola is made in Detroit. Swiss internal parts, American leather, Taiwanese case. Luxury pricing? Definitely. Inferior product? Not noticeably. Sure, a Quartz watch isn't technically as impressive as an automatic, but when the fuck am I going to notice the difference. The physical product is made from high quality materials and is durable as fuck. Who cares if the time is correct 0.00001 milliseconds or 0.0001 miliseconds. Everyone just uses their phone to tell time know anyway. It's basically a fancy bracelet.

I mean if you like it and it's worth it for you that's great, but then why are you looking for approvement online

in my opinion you're contradiction yourself while making excuses for wearing a quartz when you could just wear a mechanical instead

Fucking stupid. The watches are $600-1000. Even if they aren't super high end, they're still luxury. Cadillacs are still luxury cars even though fancier brands exists.

4chan's attitude towards brands is such a ludicrous form of elitist snobbery. I know people who act like this in real life (i.e. mocking someone for driving a Range Rover when they have a Ferrari) and everyone, even their close friends, strongly dislikes this part of their personality. It's not as if wealthy, fashionable people don't wear pair J.Crew chinos with Saint Laurent Chelseas or wear a Zara button ups with a Visvim jacket. Wearing a $700 watch for fashion doesn't make someone a pleb just because much more expensive watches exist. a mechanical watch is more like a vintage motorcycle but made new

buying a Shinola is like taking $1000 and throwing it away. There are so many better options. You want a watch where it's craft reflects the price. This mark up bs shares the same quality of a $200 Amazon-tier watch and will last you just as long. Don't waste you money just because you "love the look", you'll love the look of other watches in that price range that's appropriate.

Tissot seastar quartz, inherited from my grandfather whom I never met. Originally it came with a blue crocodile leather band, but I replaced it with this dark leather one instead. Luckily it fits my quite small wrists perfectly, since it's face is just above 3 cm.

Since this watch has some meaning to me I'm not really fond of using it for daily wear. I'm on the lookout for something on the cheap side, round the 100-200€ range.
The hard part is finding one that has a face that is smaller then 4 cm. Any tips?

Rodina seems like the most popular reasonably ok mechanical minimalist watch in that price range but it's a Nomos ripoff rather than a DW ripoff, so it's not quite the same. Shinola is garbage and that watch will be in the trash in a few years, but not because it's quartz. A good quartz watch will last just as long if you bother to take care of it. I'm still wearing the same automatic Omega and quartz Seiko my dad wore when he was my age. And the quartz one costs much less for maintenance, needs servicing less often, and keeps way better time.

Arguing about the inherent superiority of one type of watch over another is dumb because they're both good, and if you really wanted to argue that then quartz would win anyway.

Here you go, then:

http://www.gentlemansgazette.com/shinola-watches-detroit/
>Considering Shinola is often associated with “Made in Detroit,” it deserves mentioning that we have not seen a single piece of advertising or marketing material that claims exactly that. Instead, you see words like built in or assembled in and while this may sound like it’s all the same to a layman, legally it is not.
>First of all, Shinola is not a watchmaker in the traditional sense where one watchmaker creates a watch from start to finish. Much rather, Shinola watches are assembled in an assembly line, and at this point, Shinola only employs two actual watchmakers.
>Runwell with 1069: Each movement is made of 40 pieces from Switzerland assembled in Detroit, then 21 extra pieces (including the casing and glass from China) to make the watch.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-shinola-storytelling-0308-biz-20150306-story.html
>The details of its story have caused some backlash — namely, that most of its products are not actually made in Detroit but assembled there using parts mostly made in America and some from Asia. And that the idea for the luxury brand, out of reach for many in the poverty-stricken city, was the brainchild of a Texas entrepreneur who partnered with a Swiss provider of watch parts for the quartz movements.

As far as I am aware, the only company that still actually really makes watches in the USA today is RGM. If you want to buy one of their fully US-made models with in-house US movements rather than the ones they make with modified Swiss movements then be prepared to pay at least $10,000.
