My boyfriend helps me pick out options all the time! We love to go shopping after looking at inspos on here. What we do (since I'm fashionably horrible) is I will pick out things that catch my eye and try them on, then we judge how it looks, and how comfortable it feels. If I like something but am a little self-conscious, we find something similar, or a way for me to feel comfortable while wearing (ex: Putting a tshirt under a flannel or finding out how to stretch jeans since I'm 5"6 and 100lbs). (: Maybe go to a Nordstrom, H&M, or Forever 21 to help her get started. I hope this helps!
