Wear what provides the best function and best style for your environment.

And also like the idea that "tech" is all about being this untouchable, impervious thing closed off from the world is as shitty as it gets.

Clothing, certainly clothing like this, should be to take you more fully into the world, to engage with it and live in it.

I do wear most of the cheaper stuff, but what I like about other brands are the lack of labeling. I just recently got an anorak from 4dimension and there's no branding, as far as I can see. I really like that. I own a North Face jacket as well, its just.. idk overwhelming to an outfit having that big, white 'North Face' signature popping off the jacket, for me at least.

This is what my wardrobe consists of so far, I've been building it as kind of a compact travel system.

- Outlier Slim Dungarees, light but the stitching is poor and they're not very water resistant, probably wouldn't get them again

- Finisterre merino shirts, they're awesome, they can go for days between washing and they're releasing them in more colours and styles.

- Uniqlo Airism underwear, I've worn these for a week straight, they weigh nothing and feel silken

- Sherpa Adventure Gear Kailash, 80gsm Primaloft gold insulated so even though it has great water resistance it doesn't matter if it gets wet, the hood has a framework inside so it stays on your head when you wear it, no matter the wind. Slim fit too.

- John Smedley pullover, it's Merino, nice and light and I wanted something English

- Pantharella socks because nobody else makes Merino wool socks in Fairisle

All I need to finish it is a set of shoes or boots, I've been using a pair of New Balance 577 but they're starting to fall apart after barely a year.

HyVent is a brand, not an actual material with distinct characteristics. TNF slaps it on all their waterproof-breathable stuff that isn't Gore-Tex.

I don't pay much attention to TNF because their stuff is generally a few notches below other companies', so I can't speak to all the variations, but I imagine that like most in-house WP/B brands it has everything ranging from shitty coatings to actual quality three-layer membrane fabrics.

http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/rainwear.html
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/rainwear-how-it-works.html

These two articles by REI are good introductions, some stuff is slightly out of date and it's focused almost exclusively on Gore and eVent, but you'll understand what's going on with things after reading them.

HFS, come on, they're both nylon belts with Cobra buckles, but they look pretty different if you actually pay attention. There's nothing wrong with either, and there's good reasons to get either one depending on what you're going for. Personally, the more elegant, less tactical look of the Bagjack suits my style better.

The Bagjack one costs more almost certainly mostly because it's made by a smaller company without ginormous defense contracts.

No, it wasn't. It was designed for immersion suits, and it only needed to keep out water for 20 minutes or so. That was like 80 years ago. Ventile is reasonably breathable and good for snow, but it gets waterlogged in rain. If you didn't realize that, you've clearly never worn it.

I'll try to respond better later, but generally it's not as well tuned for performance and IMO the aesthetic isn't as good as some other companies.

Don't get me wrong, they do make legit gear, but a lot of their range is just geared towards a casual market without the functional and often aesthetic refinement you see with other brands. It's like comparing, say, Apple and HP.

One quick example is that their basic cheap $100 hardshell, the Venture, is probably the least breathable and least well patterned in the class.

>>10780113
Will respond to this later.

You can visibly see the workmanship is much nicer on the Bagjack, the webbing is smoother looking (and I'd guess better), and it has a D ring on it for a carabiner.

Hey techweenies:

I need a jacket that can pull double duty on the slopes for snowboarding and can be used in everyday inclement conditions as well.

You think the Beta AR would work well? It's a hard shell, so I assume you can always level up the heat factor with some layering.

I've been looking at Arc'Teryx jackets for about a week now. A video I found that does a pretty good job of explaining differences of jackets up the AT line is this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGTh1ieUeWU

Beta AR is very near to the top of their product line, which means more durability. In my opinion for a first hardshell something like the Beta LT (~220-250 on ebay) may be a better choice. That being said I don't own one of these jackets yet.

It has a nice cut for wearing casually too, but you might find it's too lightweight to wear in the cold if you arent doing something active, since getting layered as fuck to go to the store is annoying.

This strap is used on lots of expedition, out doorsy belts.
Remember you have to have the strap around 1" for it to fit in most fashion belt loops ok.

good question. I'm not a fan of the tactical style belts, but want a slick modern-looking belt like a seamless leather belt, but with something more futuristic than the classic buckle

I just saw this but in black, really like it. The khaki color was on sale for $179 vs $300 for the black...

If anyone wants to cop this pair let me know (I'll drop $15 for /fa/ggots). Tried to incorporate into my techwear cosplay but the color clashed with most of my fits.

They're nice if you have the right body frames/lines for them. Super bulky contour that isn't depicted in their from-the-shins-down photo shoot shots.

Hmu if you wanna cop tho ;)

Anyone have experience with base layers? I'm talking purely in terms of tech, not style. I don't really know anything besides uniqlo undershirts and cotton boxers. About to get some UA stuff probably.

Anyone have any experience with White Mountaineering? I'm looking at a jacket on sale in a size 2 that looks great but I'm worried about sizing. I've got pretty broad shoulders from sports and i'm afraid it might be too tight. Should I go with a norse projects shell instead?

Questions from a newbie here. I honestly hate the solid black fits and was wondering opinions on going for more of a light grey route with white and splashes of color. Noticing a lot of pieces don't come in white and I know it's not the exact "techninja" that's hype. What do you think?
