And this is my second dog. The one I have is very proud, sneaky as fuck (she always tries to steal shit even though I've punished her multiple times, so I can't forget food on tables or things like that), and she's not that demonstrative, when it comes to affection.

However, she does have a sweet side to her. She actually loves being pet and all that, but it's almost like she's ashamed of it (this might be me just seeing shit in her behavior that isn't there, though). She also gets extremely jealous easily - if I pet another animal and she's in the same room, she just keeps staring at me.

Overall, great dog, but you *have* to be authoritative, because I feel it's the kind that will try to exploit your weaknesses and be the dominant one. They're also the most adorable thing when they are young, so that's difficult.

that's all you really need to do. just because the breed standards of a dog say certain things is not a completely reliable way of determining how a dog will act. it's why a lot of trainers say a dog's behavior is probably only about 20% genetics, and 80% training/socialization. it's why a lot of people who get a certain breed after spending hours of researching on the Internet on the standards are sorely disappointed, they are standard for show dogs with extremely specific lineages that have intense training since birth, essentially. it's like a new job. how you can research as much as you want, but you won't really learn all that much until you get into it. it's why the "typical" personality of a breed of dog should only be used if you're trying to get a puppy so young that their personality based on breed is the only thing you can gamble on. adult dogs are better in that you don't have to rely so much on breed, what you see is what you get

in a nutshell, that's why basing getting a certain dog or not off Internet research isn't always the most useful thing to do. you need to interact with the dog to really know. a lot of the dogs that have the most behavior problems (GSDs, pitbulls, labs, huskies, etc) are that way because they're just high energy dogs that shitty people get for shitty reasons. usually it's that they're either pretty or that they have a certain stereotype to go with them, or both. I do have a dislike for certain breeds, but it's nothing against them. they just attract shitty people

a lot of the stuff you read about temperament or "personality" of specific breeds is anthropomorphized moot. the only things you really need to consider are size, energy level, prey drive, and need for mental stimulation. everything else is mostly up to how you train them. any dog can be a neurotic mess if you neglect their needs

not every single one uses it but most of the good shelters and rescues use it. and there's contact info so you can contact and ask more questions about a specific dog and/or set up a time to meet them if you're really interested

another factor I forgot to mention is health. anything with a brachycephalic face (pushed in like pugs or Bulldogs) is going to be less healthy, have a shorter lifespan, and likely cost you more in vet bills. just how it is. long and low dogs and giants are also typically less healthy.

another thing, if you're looking at a dog like a border collie or australian shepherd and they look like pic related, run the other way. it's called double merle and means that while they look cool, they're an inbred genetic nightmare that is unhealthy as fuck. it's so bad it's not uncommon for them to be born deaf or completely missing their eyes

mutts do have an advantage of genetic diversity too. some dogs have a core genetic pool of less than 20 dogs, so there's just about always a level of inbreeding happening. and inbreeding causes issues
