Are you at a nice restaurant and having a meal? Try one of their specialty cocktails or maybe - if you can do it without looking like a douche - wine. Most restaurants have pathetic beer offerings, so it's usually not worth your time.

Are you at a dive bar? Beer or some simple dumb shit like a rum and coke. Keep it simple because they are.

Are you at a nicer lounge? Anything of the above or a nicer cocktail.

In other words, just go with whatever makes the most sense and don't overthink it. You really can't glean much from what someone drinks, people who think otherwise are being silly.

Vodka is usually shaken because it gets the spirit colder, faster, when compared to stirring.

Gin is stirred because the agitation of shaking gives the spirit a more bitter taste (which is usually undesirable).

Honestly, liquor is disgusting. Yeah, I can tell the difference between them all by taste, and rum is by far the easiest to drink, but none of it is particularly good. You have to be in a specific mood to want liquor. Mahbe relaxing with a cigar, but not at a bar. You can't really relax there. Just go for a beer.
