How do I layer a sweater? Tried to wear a plain white tshirt under mine, but it didn't stay under collar and was visable. What to wear under sweaters beside white shirt?

Some of my shirts do this because they have a tight neckline. I either fiddle with them and stretch the neck a bit to get it hidden under the sweater, or switch shirts to a v-neck. With a very loose necked sweater it might just not work out.
