the practical issue with that, is if you set it down on its back, the edge of the camera lens hits the surface. Its a stupid thing to do, and the designers know that. The issue is everything else has shrunk so theres no way to avoid it unless you thicken the entire phone, or spend significantly more on a smaller camera system which might also give worse image quality.
Frankly, i wish they would just thicken the body up, and use that extra space to bulk up the battery. If they know the lens HAS TO BE 8mm thick, then design the phone to be that thick and migrate the components so the battery well is as big as possible, and build batteries that fill that cavity. They could probably add another 700-1000mah's with that volume.
