I'm looking for a good fall fragrance.
I am relatively new to fragrances.
I'm 19, Male, Live in California. I'd like something for casual use (example Using everyday to go to school). my price range is >$100. I've used Yves Saint Laurent's L'homme and la nuit de L'homme. D&G The One, Bleu de Chanel. CDG Floriental, play black, and Man 2. I've liked almost all of them (except for CDG #2 & Man 2).

I desperately need a new fragrance. I've worn whatever smelled best at the department store for a while, but I'm finding myself in a lot more social situations now, and I'm ready to take myself a little more seriously in this department.

I am:
Male, in a humid climate(southern US), 26 years old, I have a sort of rustic style with lots of flannels and wool work shirts(I actually worked on a farm to help pay for college - got away from both a few years ago). I'm muscular, have facial hair, etc. - I'm really really well established in a rugged but style.

As far as my experience with fragrances, I've never drifted from heavy woody stuff or generic stuff I stole from my dad. I do not want sweet.

I want something I can wear to work(I'm a wood worker, and I represent the store frequently when the boss isn't around - think casual, but respectable. My flannels still get worn here honestly, but I'm usually in an oxford shirt and chinos. Definitely no suit job).

I'd also like it if it's flexible enough for date nights. I'm no club-goer, but I'm a regular at a lounge in my area.

I want to make this clear - I don't want a strong scent. This is my #1 priority. I want something that's barely like wearing anything at all, if that makes sense.

>> No.10522509

>>10522504
Also, elaborating on the beginning, I haven't used -any- fragrance in the last year. No sweet stuff by the way, I forgot to say that. I'd prefer to stay closer to the woody/earthy scents but I do not want anything as strong as I have used in the past. Don't want to walk around smelling like a cedar tree.

Alrighty. Before I drop $20 that could buy me lunch tomorrow instead, I'd like to ask...how well does Oud Wood fulfill my goals of barely smelling like I'm wearing anything at all? I've noticed perfume stores are the worst place to try to smell anything. All the other shit getting sprayed in the air ends up tiring out your nose and distorting everything by the time you smell your first paper strip. You get olfactory fatigue just by being there, and some notes are muted more than others.

2-5 sprays depending on strength/projection and weather. If you enjoy the top notes and want them to stick around longer, a finishing spray to hair or clothing will help, and frags can stain clothing, so you'd want more of a fine mist to avoid that.

And when I say spray, I mean holding the sprayer close enough to your skin that most or all of the juice hits you without creating a puddle. ~10"/25cm depending on the sprayer. And 2-5 was my personal rule of thumb. There are people who say they get great projection with one spray, and then there are people whose skin seems to absorb scents and need more. Never rely on your own nose when testing, always ask someone else's opinion. Olfactory fatigue can make your nose an unreliable judge.

Always err on the side of caution if you are going to be around people. You don't want to be "that guy." And some people actually can have allergic reactions to some aroma chemicals.

Smell is reportedly the most powerful mnemonic, so I tend to believe when someone says a beloved scent isn't how it used to be. Reformulations are common in many industries, not just fragrance, as suppliers or methods change, certain aroma chemicals are banned by the IFRA, etc. Oftentimes they are relatively seamless, with undetectable or very minor changes, but sometimes it is very noticeable.

As said, there are countless threads on BN about this or that vintage being better, etc.

Can someone explain aventus vs git
Is aventus a meme because it costs a lot more than git? I always thought aventus smelled a little better than git or maybe the batch was nice at my mall

>> No.10555477

>>10555424
>Aventus
It's a meme simply because it's posted about frequently, silly. One isn't inherently better than the other, it's up to personal preference, and they have virtually nothing in common other than being Creed fragrances.

>> No.10555673

>>10555477
But shouldn't it's popularity merit it being it a little better at least? I was just wondering someone else's opinion since I think they're both good, but wasn't sure how memeventus got its name.

>> No.10555690

>>10555673
>it's more popular so it's better

I suppose if popularity is in your criteria for what makes something better that another, then sure. For most, I think it hardly matters, and most would disagree that something more popular is automatically a better product than something less popular without at least taking into account more significant qualities.

>> No.10555728

errr i meant to say that the other way around
its more popular because it is better is what i was trying to get at

>its more popular because it is better
I get that, but there aren't any objective reasons for Aventus being more popular and "better" than GIT when it strictly comes to the scents themselves. Maybe if you consider marketing, launch date (Aventus is a 5-6 years old, GIT came out in the mid-80s), trends, shit like that, will you maybe find something.

>> No.10556943

>>10555728
I can't think of an instance where a scent's performance affected it's popularity. Popular shit like Acqua di Gio has middling performance, and not everyone is looking for some sillage bomb all the time; a lighter hand is often preferable

>> No.10556975

>>10555728
Aventus is awful in really hot weather imo, too sickly sweet and heavy. GIT would still work in that, and has the appropriate level lightness. Performance between the two are about the same otherwise.

There are lots of non-troll scents that go better with a suit or non-casual look. Think Caron pour un homme, French Lover, Straight to Heaven, Rive Gauche, Eccelso. Wear those around campus and you'll probably attract attention, but more in the way of, "what's this guy trying to prove?".

Some niches can be had for 80-90 USD for a 50 mL (ELDO, Diptyque EdTs, maybe L'Artisan, too, just off the top of my head), which is comparable to higher-end designer stuff at retail (e.g, Bleu de Chanel EdT 50 mL goes for 70 USD)
