Thread for the OG /fa/ approved designers, and anything that fits in with the artisanal aesthetic. Pic related is the sort of shit we're looking at.
Got sick of Rick general, the discussion dissolved and so I wanted to open it up to a more general designer thread, but leave the heroin chic dudes to do what they want.
As per, post collections, questions, recent cops, inspo and anything else related to the cause.
Carry on the drag to bring /fa/ back away from its normcore tendencies, fuck that shit.

First off, anyone have any experience with Elena Dawson stuff, or even know anything of the brand? From what I've seen looks pretty similar to something like Paul Harnden, but was wondering if anyone could enlighten me a bit.
Looking at this linen shirt on grailed, wondering if its a possible Yohji alternative for a nice white linen.

I like the idea of the thread but /rickg/ turned into an exclusive club of a dozen or so posters who only come to /fa/ for it, I wonder if those people would migrate into a designer genre general or just wait for another rick general

I've got a longsleeved ribbed white tee in this blend, really nice man, stacks wonderfully on the arms, can be twisted around the body nicely - hems shred even more easily than I would have thought though, so depends whether or not you're into that look - I really am.
Also, really soft from day one.

hey.

i've been into streetwear for like 3 or so years now but I've only just started getting into designers/fashion etc. at the moment i'm mostly just interested in the shoes aspects of designers (mostly because it's easier to justify $400 on shoes than a shirt, for me) but i'm growing to appreciate the clothes too. I'm quite partial to the newer raf stuff i've seen (this season/last season), but I haven't seen much of his older stuff to compare it to.

So can anyone tell me/show me why raf's older stuff is considered his best work?

Raf's older stuff embodied a rebellious attitude, it was very finely crafted, lots of hand sewn patches etc, and was essentially 'cooler' than his more recent work, which could be described as pretty uninspired and gaudy, even his most recent collections seem to hark back to his glory days with the same level of subtlety as Eminem releasing Marshall Mathers 2. Look up some old raf seasons - particularly around 02-06 and you should see what I mean, I am really not an expert in Raf at all.

If you look at the tag of Paul Harnden's stuff it says "Paul Harnden Shoe makers", that's because before Elena Dawson worked for him all he made were shoes. She was the drafter/cutter for his stuff, which is why her stuff now looks like her work when she worked for Paul Harnden.

I live in a very humid climate that gets very dry winters and nothing has been more better at insulating me (yes, even compared to actual hiking insulation gear) than a rick silk/visc tee under a close knit woolen sweater. Can't even feel it, moulds to body, insulates. Don't be afraid to size down to get a tighter fit, it'll loosen out but after washing shrink back to size.

As far as I know, I don't think the style is called avant-garde, that's just the designers. Like, the meaning of avant-garde is something experimental and innovative.
From what I understand by this whole style, genre or aesthetic is that it's called "grunge".
But that's just my guess.

But to at least feed something...
Of those listed in the OP
Rick and Julius can be considered similar, in how they present clothing
Yohji, Ann and Raf can be considered something else
CCP experimental.

These are still extremely superficial, if these designers were adequately examined all the similarities would dissolve.

Yes, I could. What's your point?

Look, if someone is so concerned about wearing something that they need to validate it's "consistency" by posting a picture online instead of going outside and feeling things out for themselves then maybe words are lost on them to begin with.

Experience and relationships are built by investigation, not some crude autopsy by aberrant strangers.

What's the point of these threads, I really feel like sometimes even with Ernest intent the general demeanor drags everything down to pity.
I don't know how to make this explciit; no one cares about your Rick Owens or Ann Demeulemeester collections if they just sit in a wardrobe and when queried the only response is a hazy "it's poetic and a socially (internet) standardised grail"

Being competent with the pieces and a tally being able to style then together is much more important than whatever the fuck you are writing about.

Realize your fits are shit, because they are. You're proportions are always wonky, palettes clumsily put togehter, and silhouettes are always unsettling in a bad way. If you never take criticism then you'll never improve, and right now you really need to improve...

Writing up paragraphs of bullshit isn't going to suddenly make your trash fits miraculously more appealing to someone.

Even on SZ, which is based on these designers, they call it SZ-approved brands, there's no name for this style. Still, a lot of people wearing this would get stares in the street meaning people, the masses, aren't ready for this.
Avant garde means before the masses. Even if the designers aren't really similar, they're similar in the fact that their aesthetic isn't common.

Yeah, exactly. What else matters but how you feel in the clothing?
Why do I care about the "FOB Chinese kid"? ( I don't)
None of these concerns mean anything to me, especially not in how i construct my emotions in regards to clothing. That'd be dysfunctional. If my archi. was dependent on some immutable third party? What's the point, there;d be no escape.

Why does "clothing competency matter" who is measuring me? What a strange conflict. Why do you wear clothing?
If I feel complete in my styling and competency and that enhances my comfort that's great, but there's definitely no way someone else could meaningfully inform me on that without some substantial deconstruction (seldom afforded here on 4chan.org/fa).
No, to me how I feel is more important than how other peoples perspectives inform my feelings. Always the case.

I don't think my clothing are any of those things, and for some reason people feel the need to validate that (in the form of complements). What does it mean to improve? Who am I improving for?
All these questions I feel like you've never answered for yourself, but of course the query doesn't matter if the wallet stands there, and the internet here.

If you think it's bullshit that's great.
But I think maybe it's your lack of comprehension, not sure.

I thought that was interesting, the impact of isolation on creative development and how his work has been a product of that. Crafting his own neurotic creative lapses.

The label was losing money because tastes had shifted. The minimalist look that Lang pioneered had become over-saturated in the market and new trends were growing. I feel that his last seasons were some of his strongest, but they didn't sell well and the brilliance of those collections has only become appreciated years later as minimalism started coming back.

When Prada gained control of the company they made the bad move of closing the Helmut Lang Jeans label, which was a their biggest asset among the financially struggling HL portfolio. Additionally, they started running with some of Lang's latest designs, some of which were kinda strange to be honest. The look Theory era Helmut Lang has become known for appears to be heavily based on these last Lang designs and the perceived new direction he would have gone in, for instance the asymmetrical cuts now found in so much of the label's offerings.

Without a strong visionary designer, the label couldn't survive on name alone. The Theory era womenswear is not that bad, just kind of bland.

Plokhov has definitely done some good for the menswear side of things since he took over, but obviously Helmut Lang as a label will never be the same without the man.

This NYT article from around the time Lang left the label is a pretty good insight into the decline.

I'm looking for something minimal in either a dark earth tone or an off-white color.
Don't particularly want drop crotch, but I'd consider it. Also probably not looking for something ending below the knee.

Anyone have suggestions?

Prada, and then Theory catastrophically mismanaged the label, it wasn't a shift in taste...
If anything the styling was more relevant than ever, so much so it left a huge void in the market which a great number of labels looked to fill (and are still attempting to fill) today.

A few things which made HL such a powerful presence in fashion was its subversive advertising techniques/presentations to the public. The brand was never just clothing- it started clothing but it grew to so much more that to necessitate its position it depended on that "so much more", which no one respected after HL left. Things like store design, media campaigns, show presentation, model casting. All very carefully tailored to pursue HL's vision.

I thought it was that they fully integrated the HL jeans line and disowned every other? It felt like everything was brought into HL jeans so it was now analogous to the RTW stuff?

If you read some older sources/forums on the internet you'll hear people say exactly that there was a dramatic change in the clothings physical character (for the worse) after 1999.

I think that's something that a lot of companies don't understand, how some designers were far more than "clothing makers" for their company- they were it's entire philo.

tl;dr: poor management, didn't have adequate resources to upkeep, didn't respect HL's social persona and how it impacted his market.

It's really hard to sum up but it as definitely not an over-saturation or stagnation in styling...
