>mfw just woke up from a nightmare where I had an expensive watch that I loved a lot and it fell apart in my hands

I was in India for some reason, so the only thing I could do was take it to Indian watchmakers. But of course, they were fucking terrible. They also burnt my asscheeks to a crisp with a hot iron rod and I was surprisingly okay with it; but that is just dreams being dreams.

A design that isn't pretending to be something else. It's one thing to design a watch that fits the general aesthetic of divers watch. It's another thing entirely to produce a watch that's an exact copy of a Rolex Submariner with a different logo.

I just put down a $2000 deposit on one of these 'Freelancers' from Raymond Weil (Independent Swiss watchmaker). It's an Automatic with an exhibition window in the back. Total retail in Australia for this specific watch is normally around $4995. I took a few people to see this watch in the window to gauge their reactions and I was surprised at how the general consensus was that it was a much nicer watch than anything else they'd seen. I have to admit that the three-complication Chronographs are getting very common these days (on EVERY watch you find) and this one was tolerable simply because of the altered arrangements and added date and day. The grey face is quite striking and the blue hands are a nice touch. My wife hates watches and is absolutely FURIOUS that I spent this money so I know it was the right thing to do. I've bought her 5 different watches and she never wears any of them.

This RW is certainly one of the nicer (Entry-level Luxury) watches in this price range that I've handled although being all-stainless it should give me plenty of wear without the obscene price of a solid gold or solid platinum watch. The ONLY other watch that i liked this much was an A. Lange & Söhne... but those fuckers are in the High-tier Luxury Watch range and the model I like sells for US$126,000.00. Pretty sure that the cost of a service on an A. Lange & Söhne is around US$18,000... possibly even more.

If I see another Rolex (real or imitation) I'm gonna puke. Same goes for Tag Heuer... those nasty turds all contain a Seiko movement which just makes me sick whenever I think about it. My brother just lost a "nice" Tag Heuer in the surf in Hawaii (at night) so not only does he deserve it (he said the clasp was loose) but now he's wearing a cheaper one (also a goddamned Tag). I don't have to heart to tell him he's not doing himself any favors by actually wearing one of those on his flesh.

Nope. I saw the watch being sold locally for $7,000 (which was way overpriced). Went home and found a licensed dealer on Ebay who sold me one for $299. It was a great deal. Watch battery recently died though... hope it's not a problem to replace it. I hate cracking the seals on waterproof watches because you can never tell if they seal it up properly again.

I'm not a cheap bastard waving cash... I save up my dollars and buy quality material. A massive stainless watch like this is great because I spend a bit of time on the surf and when I attend a dinner or BBQ, people are usually staggered by the watches I wear. I met three watch collectors yesterday and two of them were long time friends whom I had no idea were also watch collectors.

>Rolex makes 700,000 to 800,000 watches a year.

China makes 3 million counterfeit Rolex watches each year and exports every single one of them. That means over 3 million counterfeit Rolexes are sold each year around the world.

I recently discovered that US Doctors, Lawyers and Scientists buy fake Rolex watches, strip the dial, hands and mechanism out and replace them with real spare parts. Nobody can tell the difference any more. Hence Rolex has to be the most overrated brand now. Not only are most of the ones you see fake... but every other watch maker is emulating the same style. So there's nothing original about them any more.

In the 70s people (usually young men entering the work force) would save up for years to buy a Rolex because they had a lifetime warranty on them and were a minor symbol of success.

Today, even at $10,000 plus, the Rolex is at the BOTTOM end of the luxury watch market. The entry-level Luxury Watch market is any watch between $4K and $20K. But you can buy a watch now for $5.6M if you have the cash. Except certain Patek Philippe watches... which require an interview with Mr Philippe in order to be permitted to buy one of his multi million dollar watches.

>Raymond Weil is dogshit. You find better finishing on a bloody Steinhart for a fraction of the price.

Raymond Weil make very fine watches. The finish on their dials and cases is literally first class. They're always beautifully finished and reliable. Tag Heuer is literal dogshit... along with Tudor, U-Boat, Brietling and all those mass-produced shit-tier watches with Seiko movements inside them. If you don't realize this, then you're not particularly knowledgeable of Swiss watch manufacturers
.
>Ask for a refund, never buy retail.

I never buy retail price, only street price. Not only was it 25% off the price of retail... but they incorrectly labelled the watch as a "Quartz Movement" (it's an Automatic Movement). In the end I got it for $3K instead of $5K.

>You have $2000, and you're gonna blow it on Raymond Weil?

I literally handled over 400 watches over the last two months and this particular model was the only one that appealed to me. And $2K was just the deposit I paid to secure it as the sale had ended a few days prior - I had $14K to burn

>To be honest, it mostly seems like you just want a well known Swiss brand, but you can't afford the big guns, so you settle with some shit in-between luxury price range.

My budget was $14K but I simply found NO other watch that appealed to me. There was a Burburry ($7,000) but I thought it was a little too "common" looking. The only one above that was an A. Lange & Söhne ... but the price on that was crippling at over $126K so there's no chance of me buying one of those when the service fee alone is $18K. I'm not being cheeky... I really did like the A. Lange & Söhne. But I'm not paying that much money for a watch. Hell, there's counterfeits at $1000 that look good enough. But the RW was not subjected to counterfeit and the Grey dial with Blue hands really made a difference with the polished steel and leather. There's dozens of stainless watches with leather bands and Chrono complications on them and today I looked at the shit-tier Hugo Boss, Fossil and U-Boat versions ... all of which looked common and uninteresting. One of the selling points of the RW was that it has a very small logo/name. It doesn't project the name like some of the shittier commercial brand watches do.

>And if anybody told you that the watch costs $4995, they're lying or have found the most expensive option they could find, because I can easily find it in the $2-2500 price range.

This watch (in Automatic, not Quartz) sells for AU$4999. I bought it for $3K. The US market sells it for around US$2.7 - $3K. Even after reading some of the negative comments here, I'd recommend that you pop down to your local dealer and just handle one of the Freelancer series.

OMFG! Tudor are 1960s "imitation watches" that originally started out as a "poor man's Rolex" (and was known as the Poor Man's Rolex decades before Archie used the term). Even today, I only found ONE seller (in the largest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere) selling Tudor. They're tacky. They're essentially overpriced. And they' disgusting to look at. People look at it, assume it's a Rolex... then lean in close to read the name.... notice then that it says "TUDOR" and them chuckle because they know you couldn't afford a Rolex because why else would you be wearing a Tudor?

From AskMen-com.... [QUOTE]: "At first glance, Tudor is the perfect watch for the US market. The most popular ones are beefy sports watches that look best on FAT wrists."

Also: [QUOTE]: "Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, the people who seem to really be excited about Tudor are those who weren’t around when the brand failed the first time around. They’re the young hipsters buying up vintage Rolexes and wearing them on cheap nylon straps that go so well with their ironic T-shirts and facial hair. They love the fact that the old Tudors look like Rolexes but aren’t Rolexes, so when they wear them, they won’t look like all the other bearded hipsters with nylon-strapped Rolexes in the pub. Think they’ll be happy when the pudgy dude in Dockers in line at Starbucks is wearing a new Tudor?"

[Quote from Archie]: "Just don't talk about intermittent bearing FAILURES" !! - "Compared to Rolex they are amazing value".

Rolex is a master of Marketing. They've convinced the world's population back in the pre-60s that with a Lifetime Warranty (not sure if that still exists) and premium quality, they're great value. But they're not. Back then a Rolex was $10K. Just how many $100 watches could you buy to do the same job in your lifetime? Five? Ten? Rolex was never about value... just quality and brandname. That's why anyone buys an expensive watch.

They were founded in England but moved their base of operations to Switzerland in 1919. They produce over 2,000 watches per DAY (!) and have a global revenue of over 8 Billion dollars. Fore this reason, you're paying too much for what used to be a very highly desirable brand. People claim they're worth money but unless you're buying a piece of art with limited numbers, it's always money down the drain.

Every brand of car gets you from A to B. But the Ferrari's' are so expensive (even though they don't come with an air-conditioner) that they continue to turn heads. They're an outward sign of wealth and therefore social status. This means people who want to make an impression on strangers will always want to buy them. Therefore, their only value is for bragging-status and literally nothing else.

Rolex started a trend. Look at Nixon watches. They were cheap and nasty and sold for $35 just a few years ago. But now they're trying to sell less watches but at premium prices. I saw one for $1100 last week. A Nixon! When did they get so big for their britches? They're trying to go "upmarket" with a quartz movement in a mass produced case. I could have sworn I saw one for over $1500 recently too. A Nixon! Ha!

Rolex make GOOD quality watches. But these days you could spend $170 on a Fossil watch with a similar build and design. Sure, those things are essentially a dime a dozen but they're also pretty soundly constructed. Why waste money? Because society rewards outwardly (apparently) "successful" people.

>I do wonder how much shit i'll get for asking this but what exactly makes rolex/omega and such worth so much more than other watches which use their exact design bar the name?

Both are premium names. Both suggest wealthy and therefore implied "power" for the wearer. Omega was THE brand in the late 70s and Rolex was above it in terms of desirability for brand name alone. Buzz Aldrin wore an Omega watch on the moon... which gave untold glory to the name. Armstrong also wore one but left his in the Lunar Module during EVAs since there was a malfunction on the timer on the LEM and he used his watch instead.

Many people don't realize this but Rolex make Tudor brand watches. They made Tudor for people who want a Rolex but can't justify the price. It's a smart little sideline because you get the Rolex quality at a much more realistic purchase price and Rolex still rakes in the dollars from the sale of every Tudor watch.

>China made doesn't mean bad anymore.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there. China's problems are limitless and anything manufactured in China is likely to be considered "Garbage" by anyone who monitors quality manufacturing.

Manufacturing medical needles in China? My friend did. He later discovered that the factory manager has sold 7 of their 8 buckets of nickel for the plating process for 20 million needles. The resulting products were so fragile that they snapped when slightly bent at both ends. All 20 million were later destroyed due to poor quality.

If China's not screwing you over for manufacturing quality, they're selling your designs and prototypes to relatives at rival factories which later will result in counterfeits flooding the streets.

China is a problem.

Why would I care about medical needle manufacturing in a watch thread?

Check out Bejing Watch Factory, or some of the chinese micro brands such as Maison Celadon, and then go eat a dick. They offer watches with great movements for cheap-ish money (around the $1k mark). The manufacturing is overseen by an AHCI master watch maker.

I wear a few different watches but it's mostly because I'm a watch nerd and just want to match my suit, not because I need a particular one or any at all. If I go out into the field and actually need to time something, which happens rarely, I wear a digital G-Shock.

I looked into this and the Bulova Super Seville. I would buy one, but I don't want to look like a poser with a fake Rolex. Guess I'll have to wait until I can afford a real Datejust / Oyster.
