Pretty sure that you have never worn an actual suit. Which basically holds true for all people who say these sort of things.

I know how you feel. I'm right at that awkward late-'20s age where I look ridiculous if I dress like I'm still in high school/college, but I'm not in a line of business where anybody but the execs wear suits.

World is changing, man. Used to be a suit was required. Now it's mostly optional. OP's pic is actually a nice middle ground - suit, but no tie.

Used to wear one daily. Didn't mind it because was wall street and invested upfront on tailoring and actually felt good when work was done. Then wound up in CA and doing tech and hardly wore the thing.

There are days I miss it. Would love to see it come back, even if only a retro thing. I couldn't carry Clooney's kinda funky pocket square, and exquisite fabric is a bit too shiny for /biz/ purposes, but damn he makes it work. The informal dark shirt and lack of tie? That could work anywhere.

I'm in CA too (LA), so suits are basically unheard of. Even the way Clooney's rocking it here is still overdressed, this is the city where everybody but accountants and CEOs goes to work in shorts and T-shirts.

It's weird, actually. LA is one of the biggest cities in the fashion industry, but you almost never see people wearing /fa/ stuff on the street, unless they're on the way to a club or they're part of certain black subcultures. Whenever I'm in SF, NY, or even Seattle I see way more people that care what they wear, whether it be avant-garde stuff or just nice everyday clothes.

Suit no tie confirmed goat. Otherwise knit tie is dank.

Is there some kind of stigma against plain black ties?
My mom told me repeatedly as a child that black ties are for children

Im beginning to think she didnt know what the fuck she was talking about

Also suit with no tie is goat indeed

There are extremly formal.
Mostly for funerals, waiter butler, bodyguards... where people have to look well dressed but without standing out.
Maybe for very formal weddings

Also mormons.

Really though, I think a black tie can be OK if it has an interesting texture and isn't worn with a black suit. (Which you shouldn't be wearing except to a funeral during daylight hours anyway.)

it's 10-20 degrees warmer in ellay than sf/ny/sea.

/fa/ goes on, it just depends on the part of town you're in. or what scene you're plugged into. money is more segregated here than in most other cities, because l.a. isn't as dense as they are. so if you're not seeing /fa/, maybe you're in the wrong places. or your definition of /fa/ is different.

I get around the region a lot and end up at things from mexican yard parties to edgy local rock shows to studio executive weddings, so I've seen a pretty good slice.

I think the heat is definitely a factor here. Also, though, surf culture is still a big influence on average LA dress, and there's also a lot of emulating the way celebs dress locally, which is usually turned pretty down because they don't want to attract attention.

The SoCal "uniform" is graphic tees for both sexes, with jeans or cargo shorts for guys and jeans or leggings for girls, and you don't see a lot of breaking away from it. "Cool" hipster types might wear nicer jeans and shoes and quality solid tees, and bros might wear a polo instead of a T if they're "dressed up" for a night out.

The only people I tend to see who are actually putting in effort to style are Asians, who often go for upscale business casual type stuff, and black guys.

this

but that's mostly a historical thing
Slimane brought back the skinny black tie look in the early 2000's.
At this point the only worry is that it's kinda played out since everyone and their mom tried to copy the Dior skinny look.

It's a really relaxing occasional extra buck and a reason to wear suits.

Funny because there isnt a single person on this planet who isnt a wagecuck. Doesnt matter if youre self employed or not: you still have to cater to the needs of others receive your paycheck
