Where do I buy samples?
http://surrendertochance.com/

Ebay

You should always try a local upscale store just in case they have it, because that'll drop at least half of your blind buys.

I wonder if I should get Burberry London or Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Havane

London is discontinued so bonus cool kid points for still having one and it allegedly smells good, but I haven't smelled it personally and it would be a blind cop.

Pure Havane smells really delicious and has better stats on fragrantica, but it is 30 bucks pricier than London. Seriously felt I came in my pants when smelling it.

It ain't rocket science. Go to whatever store carries a lot of fragrances. Try 1 or 2 on your skin, not those plastic sticks. This is important because fragrances can react differently to different people. Then go home and see how they develop over the day (also how it performs with sillage and longevity). Also ask your friends and family what they think. Do this several times to get a good number of different fragrances under your belt. After that, you can make an informed decision.

>im 18, ideas on what higher end cologne to get for winter that is actually good, not a shit tier cologne that plebian young people wear? tired of the really cheap ones, looking for something the norm teen/youth will appreciate but thats also actually good

Tried some more colognes today like CH, Dior Homme Intense (3/10 on my skin, too spicy), L'eau D'Issey (Smelled really strong of christmas spice on me which wasnt that pleasant tbh), Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille (Will wear this when Im older but I dont feel a young person like me can pull this off, better for classy 25+ people), etc.
The ones I really really liked were YSL L'Homme and Dior Eau Savage, I liked them cause they were a little more interesting than just "fresh young man" type thing, Eau Savage had great peppery spicy notes along with the fresh citrus and whatnot which I like, I'm not that good at notes as you can hear. L'homme was my favorite, couldn't even identify the notes in this but I kept smelling it again and again, really nice one, also lasted longer than eau savage. Still on the lookout though, trying to find my signature scent so I'm trying my best to be precise and careful.
Anyone have any other young-but-good reccomendations?

Reminds me of my grandfather's aftershave, which is a positive thing for me, but it's barbershop all the way. Women love it, but it gets more attention from the 30-40 year olds than girls my age. They'll ask what it is because they want their husband to wear it.

People (especially Fragrantica types) "love" stuff that makes them cream their pants, drop their panties or whatever. A scent might smell spectacular and even get people horny, but if you're wearing it for casual situations, that probably comes off as super try-hard.

If you like the way it smells on you then you should buy it. A lot of people come on here and talk shit about certain fragrances but if you like then who the fuck cares what someone else thinks.

Well, in short, Dior Homme is more versatile. You can wear it pretty much everyday in pretty much any situation. DHI is a much heavier, sensual scent. I love it but there are fewer situations that I find it acceptable for. For instance, I think it works incredibly well for a night out or date scent. That said, there is no denying we are now conditioned to some extent to expect women to smell a kind of way, and men another, in the broadest possible sense. Wouldn't you rather a woman smell "like a woman?" And I'd expect women want their men to "smell like men."

There are tons of expectations at play.

Pizza smells good. Apple pie smells good. If your pizza smelled like apple pie and vice versa you'd most likely be repulsed.

It's like asking "if men like women who look feminine/petite/etc, why don't men try to look like that themselves?"

There's also a difference between things that smell good and things that smell attractive in certain conditions. Most people find motor oil, tar, gasoline to not smell good. And yet on a certain type of man, people will say it smells manly (in a good way).

He likes powdery scents and his favorite notes are lavender and vetiver, though I suspect it'll be difficult to find something that hits all those bases so please just give me your favorites that fits each description, or ones that hit two of the three. Also, he doesn't really give a fuck if a scent is traditionally masculine or feminine.

For further consideration, some bottles he currently owns are L'Artisan Bois Farine, The Different Company Pure eVe, Serge Lutens Gris Clair, Etat Libre d'Orange Fat Electrician, Prada Infusion d'Iris, and Prada Infusion de Vetiver

>I suspect it'll be difficult to find something that hits all those bases
In picture related, I'm sure the "powdery notes" is the limiter here. Never heard of either frankly.

Once I remove the powdery qualifier, the list opens way up, but there aren't too many where the vetiver or lavender is the main attraction. Alas, I'm not the biggest lavender fan, as I find that note one that screams "old man" to me, and I *love* mature scents. That said, of the ones that I own, I'd check out (in order of my favorites):

Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentrée - screams "gentleman" to me. Near my upper lavender limit, but I love this in summer.
Rive Gauche pour Homme - I also feel gentlemanly wearing this. Barbershoppy. And near my upper limit for powder. Did I mention I don't like powdery scents? Very powerful.
The Third Man - I personally find this cloying and too powdery. Something I'd say a fop would wear, but it's well-respected and screams lavender.
Azzaro pour Homme - another lavender bomb, but this one is sharp with a very strong anise note just below. I don't care for anise either... :/

Wish I could be of more help.

That's an A*Men clone. A*Men is a heavy gourmand clubbing scent. Totally inappropriate for work or school. I hated A*Men for a long time, but I did grow to love it. But it's not like I'm gonna force myself to wear it. I'll try it a few more times and then throw it out, probably.

I guess after this ordeal, I'd say something not too sweet. I tried on la nuit de l'homme and found it way too spicy. I'm not too fond of citrus (although I like Eau Sauvage). Just looking to smell good, but at the same time unintrusive.
I'm 21. Not sure about style. I'm assuming you mean the way I dress? Normal, jeans and a nice sweatshirt. A lot of people at school wear stuff I wouldn't wear outside of the house (like sweatpants). I guess I wear stuff a step above that.

I wouldn't say I get compliments all the time, but maybe a couple times a month. First of all, are you wearing enough? I used to be a one or two spray max guy, but it was only when I upped my average to three or four sprays could other people actually smell it. It's a balancing act. The last thing I want to be is "cologne guy," so determining each fragrance's correct dosage and application is important, by asking friends how I'm smelling.

Second, some cultures tend to be more reserved about complimenting someone they don't know. I'm American, and compared to some countries in Europe, we seem to be less shy about talking to strangers.

That being said, when I wore it I started getting compliments.

One was from this girl I'm seeing, we were outside and she said casually "you smell good"

Yesterday though, I was walking out of the university dining hall and the lady at the booth told me to come here. She asked what I was wearing and said that I smelled good. I was surprised that she could smell it (because I can't) and she said that when I walk in through the door the gust blows my scent around a bit. I get compliments from female friends a lot, and from my partner/a man I'm with, especially they notice a new smell on me. Girls are more likely to screech "oh my god what is that, it's nice, only you could pull that off!" and guys "You're wearing something new, I like it."

Whatever research you've done on skin chemistry probably didn't tell you much more than "different scents smell differently on different people to different people."

People give compliments as positive reinforcement, which is why men are more likely to receive points from prospective sexual partners, and women are more likely to be expected to smell good. It's the same as how you thank a guy for filing his nails, but he doesn't thank you for shaving your pussy. Call it a double standard but women are just expected to smell ncie. Don't expect compliments if you wear something really plain jane.

>>10320244

Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue - citrusy, summery, marine, likely to be bought by girls because it's the only thing with the D&G name they could afford, bought because members of the opposite sex generally like it

>1 Million

J'Adore - Used by girls who drop words like "classy" and instagram the pics taken from club's Facebook pages with captions about how friendship never ends

Flowerbomb - same type of girl but more likely to be used by white girls who want to feel more "exotic"

>Aventus
Maybe Black Orchid - wannabe niche, girls who just took a rec from someone on the Internet and have something more expensive than their friends. VERY VERY FEW women can pull this off.

or Rose 31 - reinvents a classic flowery notes, sexes it up. Chances are they probably smelled this in the soap at a Fairmont Hotel on vacation with their parents and then asked if they could have it

(In terms of Creed scents, Silver Mountain Water is really popular among women, but doesn't ooze primal femininity, the way that Aventus does masculinity)

Not mentioned:
Marc Jacobs Daisy - worn by girls who have always been treated like princesses

Prada Candy - for party girls who grew out of Pink Sugar and Vera Wang Princess and still want to smell like sexy, sexy sugar

Thierry Mugler Alien - For special snowflake, but fashion-y types who live in flyover states. The biggest store in the city is a Nordstrom. They have a tumblr page where everything is reblogged.

Tokyomilk Dark anything - formerly had a myspace page and wore pyramid belts. May have been scene or emo, definitely shopped at Hot Topic in the past.
