10289135 No.10289135 [Reply] [Original]

Greetings,

I made a couple threads in the past asking for some male long-hairstyling, but most of what I got was pretty basic, like ponytails, samurai bum and braid/dread stuff.

Due this lack of experimentation and also because I wanted to better understand hair for drawing purposes, I decided to make my own hair the guinea pig for some styling.

Pic related is 11 months of growth, plus a few binders I bought to start and some quick sketches of my long-term plans for experimentation.

Some notes to take:
>This is going to be hair-only experimenting.
I don't have any sense of fashion. I like comfy, cheap and loose clothes. I don't even go out.
>I will focus on tying, braiding and basic "natural" styling.
I don't intend doing permanent changes like dyeing or cutting/shaving it up. At least not while it doesn't get long enough to try the stuff I've already sketched.

--

If you'd like to give any input, welcome. I will attempt to use the binders now (does anybody know how this stuff is called?) for your entertainment. I have never tied anything other than my shoelaces. Wish me luck.

Apparently, my hair is still too short to make a ponytail, my bangs will get back to place and look like shit.

By tying only the bangs, I managed to keep it in place.

This looks like a better option, is that "tail" on top of it strange?

You missed the entire point. Read the OP, please.

Thanks. I believe it's autistic, though. On the hair straightening, I dislike the artificial look of it, most women will use it and it's pretty lame.

Maybe I could make it a bit less puffy though, by combing or some shit. I will attempt this soon.

i understand your issue with straightening because i used to feel the same way. however, i think you should at least consider it.
straightening will make it easier to style, and it will appear much longer. it looks
stupid on basic bitches because they just straighten it and leave it like that.

it's usually easy to add texture to hair that's been straightened with product. you could also just straighten from the roots to halfway down, or from the ends to halfway up. your hair is really curly at the bottom and the drawings don't suggest that so idk if that's what you wanted or not

>> No.10289303

Really cool stuff OP. You will definitely need to learn and use a straightener if you are getting into hair styling. There is no way around it.

Still on the basics, the tiara (?) is the easiest one to keep bangs out of my eyes and gives a similar look as the "uptail" >>10289249. But I think I like the uptail more, since it doesn't make my front hair look like a hair gel zen garden.

>>10289278
I used to use conditioner, but my hair is oily as fuck and it will actually get worse somehow. Mom suggested I quit using it and my hair has been surprisingly easier to keep since then...
Also what's with trimming ends? Won't that make me Cleopatra or some shit?

Now I for one love women in pig/twintails, but this is a hairstyle I've heard even women complaining about, because it's "too girly" or "kid-like".

Could a man ever pull pigtails off and look not-ridiculous?
Pics are inconclusive, because I don't have enough hair yet to make real tails.

I had to make a pretty cumbersome knot with an elastic and that claw-thing to keep the bangs up, so not a good result.

If you have any ideas on how to tie this mess properly, I'm open to instructions.

It's called a headband. And no, with the texture that yours is it won't flatten out enough. Straighten it. And trimming your ends won't turn you into an Egyptian woman, it will just make your hair look 80% more manageable.

>> No.10289505

Hey OP,

My hair is about one inch over my belly button. I can't take a picture right now, but if I get the chance soon, I will.

First of all, make sure your hair is thoroughly washed and clean. Use a shampoo that is conceived for oily hair, and don't be afraid to try other products, straighteners and even dry shampoo.

The first thing you want to do once out of the shower is to dry them with a towel on your head. Push the excess water manually and let it rest: your hair texture will be awful if you towel-dry it by shaky-shaky.

Make sure to touch your hair the LEAST POSSIBLE in a day. If you really want to grow you hair long, you need to make sure it's healthy and well-treated; over-washing and underwashing can be really bad both for your scalp, and for your hair.

What I mean by that is that washing everyday isn't good. Your hair is oily because you don't wash correctly, and probably touch your hair a lot. A rule of thumb is that your hands should touch your hair only when they are washed, or if you're going to shower. Also, you should try marrocean brushes (I believe that is the name). They're extremely good for moving the oils.

On styling,
I wear braids and french braids because I can pull it off easily, but I wouldn't advocate it for everyone. Top knots, buns, ponytails are all good options. Don't be afraid to mimic certain more femininine styles; androgyny can make you look better.

if possible, you should take pictures without glasses and blur only the eyes, skin on the noses. TBH, no body here want to dox you because you're growing your hair... it takes a lot of courage and lots of perserverance.

Straighten it at least once with a female friend WHO KNOW WHAT SHE'S DOING, and if possible ask her. Girls will be glad to help you if you ask them things like "Is there any way I could have a nicer texture, I feel like my hair is just messy and ugly".

Hair is not only about shampoo.

>> No.10289510

>>10289505
Last but not least, you're in the mid level. It's the awkward part of growing which is "I can't bun it, but I can't let it loose". I used to wear bandanas and half-top knot back then.

But seriously, checking at your pictures, it's not worth considering growing furthermore if you don't solve your hair grease problem ASAP and if you don't at least try what people suggest you (like straightening)

I would go on but I'm fucking tired and I could use some sleep. We'll meet again.

Oh and, seriously ditch the fucking hell those 'styles' you're posting. half knot or find a way to keep them in place until you can bun them. Don't try to 'triple pony, quadra pony, etc'. You can't pull it with your current predication.

>>10289497
Oh yeah, my concern is mainly about losing volume, which would make any styling pretty plain. I will look into some straightening methods to understand more about it.

The trimming stuff I've found doesn't seem very convincing, though. I looked at my bangs for a few minutes and couldn't find a single split hair, and it's been 11 months since I last cut it. These articles tell me to trim every 6~8 weeks to avoid it. What the fuck.

I'll be waiting for your picture, anon. If you could show some alternative hairstyles you've been trying other than the typical buns and ponytails, that'd be great.

I wash it maybe twice a week, always shake it like a dog after shower and whatnot.

For an easy start, I will take your washing and touching advices, thanks.
I use this brush, but very rarely, most of the time I just let it dry as is and "hand-comb" it afterwards. Also is this enough of my face? What for?

I don't have any friends, but I'll ask a coworker about the straightening stuff if it's not a permanent thing (still reading).

About the styles, they are - of course - not intended for everyday usage, I'm just testing out how they look, I won't go all Yotsuba to the streets.

Here's my two cents on hair care:

Understand that hair from your follicle down is just a bunch of dead cells. Hair is dead, it will NOT repair itself once it's damaged. That's why you need to keep your ends in check: once those are damaged (heat, bleaching, frequent friction), your hair will grow from the top, but break at the bottom, making total growth really hard. Not to mention, split/damaged ends will make your hair look like a frizzy mess and like shit overall.
This is why you need to trim your hair ever so often. 6 to 8 weeks is a bit much if you don't mess around with it, but I'd cut it at least a couple of times a year.

Learn how to shampoo. Don't wash your hair every day and use specific products. Usually one shampoo rinse and conditioner is fine. Conditioner needs to be applied mid hair down ONLY (to keep your ends moisturized, since they're far from the scalp and its oils) and never to your scalp.
Don't do the shaky thing with the towel to dry them, you'll end up breaking your hair.

Brushing is good for you. Helps with circulation to your scalp and helps distribute the oils to your ends. If you don't like how your hair looks afer brushing it, do it before going to bed.

On a personal note, I suggest you get thinner elastic bands, they work better when you don't have too much hair! Also, I don't see why you should straighten it, but that's more of a personal style choice.

TL;DR keep your ends nice and moisturized, avoid too much heat and friction, style however.

Leaving it like that doesn't look too bad, like others have said condition and oil shit could also look nice.

If you don't know already, conditioner is much different than shampoo, shampoo is cleaning shit and conditioner is lotion shit. Shampoo 2-4 times a week and condition more than that, on days that u use both shampoo first then condition, get enough in your hand and spread that shit all over your hair and leave it there for 1-2 minutes then wash out and dry your hair with a towel. This will get your hair shiny, soft, straighter (towel dry removes air dry therefore less curls).

Sadly this pic is before I was really taking care of my hair, also the cut is shit but ehh I want to post it. 13 months of growth in arizona (dry af hair) and on the right is 4 inches off back touch up errywhere else. Also interested in what I could do with it when I grow it back out again.

Uhh... No, I don't think a girl's hair is naturally fake-looking.

Pic related is the best, because it looks natural. Maybe there is some product on it, but it's not over the board. Same goes for makeup - as long as it doesn't interfere with the original looks, only touching it up, it's fine.

The picture you've posted, for example, makes me uneasy because square-brows, blush and lipstick are screaming WAKE-UP! GRABABRUSHANDPUTALITTLEMAKEUP!

dyed/bleached my hair about a month ago, then again a few weeks after to lighen it even more, First pic is after first time, second pic is first time tied up then third is second time under brighter light

Hair is now a bit longer, got about 2cm of roots (dark blonde, looks cool i guess).

Only reason I did it was to see if i liked it, if i didnt i was gonna buzz, turned out that i really liked it and havent had any intention to cut anytime soon. My hair is probably 40cm at its longest (my fringe) after about two years growth from my last real cut this time last two years ago. Now that I've started dying I can't really go back to my natural colour, so ill either keep dying or or buzz when i finally get bored.

Usually put it in a messy bun type thing, or tie back. Pissed i have v v straight hair rather than something a bit frizzy but fuck it i'll live

I need help, every time I go several days without shampoo my hair just looks matted and greasy. Does it get better in time and I just need to power through or is there something I can do to make it look better? Small amount of conditioner? I can't figure out a good routine.

Hey, I'm back.
Still a bit too late to take a pic, but I will soon - I swear.
You're at the awful part where hair curls at the bottom, but the overall shape of the hair is still too short to really profit from it. Something I usually do is to use my two thumbs, slide over my eyebrows, and grab the crown of my hair. Once it's neatly separated from the rest, I bun it. It will look like a half bun, but a bit awkward for your hair lenght. It's a good way to not look like an idiot when trying to keep hair away frmo your face.

As I can tell, also, you have a layered haircut, which is not rare on men. If you intend to keep it for several years, you might eventually want to equalize everything and have a smoother layering (now it's like a step difference between front a back, and could look extremely bad if the back grows in a mullet, and the front just curls.

>>10289649
That look pretty good. Take habit to brush BACK your hair, and perhaps middle separate your hair. Eventually, by doing it over and over again over course of months, your hair will naturally separate at the front, and give you more possibilities in term of styling (it'll 'break' the hair into a better position)

As far as I'm concerned, it would look good with a nice middle line, with maybe a small slick (no gel/paste, just everyday brush's).

I was asking for pictures so we could see your eyebrows-nose-jaw proportions.

>>10292293
I must say it looks good, but it's typical for girls. OPs lots of year to learn back in order to achieve this.
>>10293051
Paste / Gel. His hair look oily because of those products. Don't use the shiny one, it'll look like shit !

>>10295129
Work a bit on your eyebrows. The jaw line does help, but I'd think you'd look much better with either bun, or short hair

>>10298006
You already have quite a lot of volume because your hair is entangled. You can get the same similar volume by simply rocking your head a bit and letting thing get ample.

I think people should just find whatever suits them, forcing bad haircuts that dont fit you isnt going to help. Like, growing up with curly/coarse hair ive tried just about everything. First pic is years ago in highschool, was trying to learn how to straighten it cause everyone told me to brush my hair ( which made it huge! ) Its so so cringey.

Then I moved on to straightening and embracing my edgy emo, and then the last is few months back but where im at now only little bit longer. Curly hair has some ridiculous good days and some ridiculous bad days, im still trying to figure out a routine and considering goin back to weeboo.

no poo just makes your hair greasy and dirty.

your hair is just dry and damaged, you should deep condition it once a week or every 2 weeks.

put a deep conditioner in your hair and let it sit for 1 hour or more if you have time (or you can use avocado/greek yogurt)
wash your hair every 2-3 days (shampoo+conditioner) don't use a towel to dry it, and since your hair is wavy/curly only comb it when its wet or your hair will get puffy.
and you can use coconut oil to style it if it gets dry.

>> No.10304425

>>10304386
anybody who gives you a definitive answer to that question should be ignored, honestly. no poo entirely depends on your hair and genetics. the best way to figure it out is to try for a month and see.

I am (>>10295129) and I've done no poo since may 2013. my hair looks best this way, and I ultimately prefer it because it's cheap and low effort. It's worth trying because if it works for you it's definitely more convenient than anything else
