Anyone have any experience with Tuscan Leather? I really like the longevity of TV and wan't some other TF Private Blend to go with it.

How are there "tiers" in fragrances? I mean sure there are ones that are more diligently produced with artisinal care but at the end of the day, it all comes down to how good you smell after application and mixing with your body's natural scent.

This is the best scent I've ever owned. I tried samples from various Niche brands like Le Labo, Creed, Amouage, MDCI, Tom Ford, and other Bond No. 9. And most of that stuff is out of my price range of $100 for a 1.7-3.0 oz bottle.

So I decided to get pic related. And the notes are really interesting. Very smooth almost chocolaty, kinda dark, unisex, and kinda vanilla.

Very smooth. If a women wore it though I would think she is a high class punkster.

Bare in mind that the only 2 other fragrances I've owned are Lalique Encre Noire, and Kenzo Jungle.

Which are alright, but I dislike the Jungle. It is too bright for me. I prefer darker scents. And Lalique Encre Noire is a good woodsy scent, but kinda intoxicating to a point.

I Love New York For All is better then those two by a wide margin. I would put it competitively with the Niche fragrances I've mentioned. Not as good as Tom Ford, Le Labo, and Amouage. But it competes fairly with the others.

Don't buy the Tobacco Vanille, friend. I fell into the same trap. Sampled it for the first time and bought it right there on the spot. It's pretty intoxicating the first few times you wear it, too. At some point like two weeks in, your nose will turn on you and every time you spray that bottle, it smells like a cheap candle.

Maybe this is just me and my nose, but damn I've never had a fragrance turn on me like that.

Current go-to fragrances:
Santal 33
L'Air du Desert Marocain
Escentric 02
Invasion Barbare

Key word here, friendo.

My top two favorite scents are Andy Warhol by Bond No 9 and 2 by Comme des Garcons yet I still think Bond No 9 overall is only above average and CdG is fairly mediocre.

They add musk to pretty every scent they got and it really fucks with a lot of them. Little Italy REALLY took a hit from that, it's down right one of the worst I've ever smelled.

So yeah, they're up there but like perfumers such as Creed they don't really have too much of a Wow factor to them.

Nope, but I'll try to make a shitty one for you.

First off, you should most likely go to any store that can sell fragrances like Sephoras, Nordstrom, etc. Sample any of the fragrances they have available. There is the stigma around "perfume for women, cologne for men" blah blah who gives a shit. If you LIKE it, then wear it. Doesn't matter if you're a guy, girl, 15, 40, whatever. Like it? Want to wear it? Wear it. I walked past some goofy teenager the other day at the mall and he was wearing Chanel No 5. Kid was probably like 16-16. Guess what? It WORKED. But I digress, so just sample several on the sampling strips, narrow it down. And whenever you find 1 or 2 that you like, spray it on your skin, then go about the day and let it develop and see how it reacts with your skin. You'll figure out if it smells good, bad, the sillage, longevity, etc. And just go from there: Does it smell amazing? That could be a plus but if for example the longevity was garbage. You might want to look for another fragrance unless you don't mind those issues. Then basically just but whatever you like.

Always sample before you buy something, luckyscent.com is where you can purchase a shit ton of samples if you want to get some fragrances that you might not otherwise be able to. However a lot of perfumeries do send out free samples, so email any perfumery and see if they'd be willing to work with you. Most will, however some will tell you to fuck off.

Now, as for some 'suggestions' for perfumers...generally the more popular shit like Acqua Di Gio and such are fine, they tend to not smell awful to most and you'll probably end up liking it. BUT, again, not everyone will like it so sample that shit regardless. I personally think that some fragrances like Creeds, Tom Fords, etc are GREAT but they're not $200, $300, $400+ great. Some people can do that, I can't because I'm broke as shit.

Tom Ford, Creed, Le Labo, CB I Hate Perfume, CdG, Tauer, etc.

Nobody carries it. You have to buy directly from his website.
Buy some samples. His fragrances are more olfactory artwork in most cases. He has an uncanny ability to recreate and bottle "scenes", none of which you'd actually wear as a fragrance but still incredible nonetheless:
At the beach 1966
CB beast
Greenbriar 1968
In the library
Memory of kindness
In the summer kitchen

But he does have some fragrances that are suitable for wearing as actual fragrances:
7 billion hearts
Fire from heaven
Russian caravan tea
Patchouli empire
CBMUSK
M1 Narcissus

Then there are some that I just think are way too subtle for my taste:
M4 Room with a view
M5 Where we are there is no here
To see a flower
Under the arbor

However, the main issue even with the fragrances that are wearable is longevity. Two hours tops, man. Pretty terrible.

Checked.
Seasonality and evolving taste of the participants, I imagine.
It takes at least a day of wearing to really get to know a good candidate scent, and then maybe a week or two to know if it really fits, and for what occasions.
So building up a decent knowledge of the landscape, even just the mall-tier canon, can take a few months.
That, and every once in a while someone posts something new worth investigating. So it's a little bit of a Skinner box.

I know Creed tops the list, but as a guy who owns GIT and Aventus and has samples of a dozen more, I find Creed overpriced and boring now. Yes, I started out wanting scents to impress girls, but I'm the one who has to smell myself all day and bottom line, it's the confidence boost I get from smelling great that gets the girls and not the fragrance, so I'm gonna wear what I like. ...for you.

Not that I put much credence in fragrantica's ratings, but it would seem that the majority prefer TdH in Fall and Spring and the minority in Winter. I think the earthy, mineralic citrus really works great in the LA summer heat for me. Kind of like a dry sidewalk after the first drops of a summer rain hits it. It's the cloying, powdery, rich, heavy scents that choke me out in the summertime, but TdH isn't any of those things.

I'm looking for a wintry scent, but I hate heavy scents. I just want something to feel natural and pleasant. Used to lightly spray myself with Azzaro Chrome Legend but couldn't overdo by a hair without going overboard.

I don't think that's a wintry scent, but it had the right spirit when sprayed lightly. Got complimented a lot for it, and the gf I had then liked to rest on me and cuddle over it. What even makes a scent more suited for summer, fall, winter or spring? Day, night? Is it what the season evoques? Or is an extension of the "label" we give a perfume, for men, for women.

Citrus aquatic for summer, fresh green for spring, spicy for fall, woodsy balsamic for winter.
What I see on sites like fragrantica is a tendency to lump the day scent with summer/spring, and night scents with winter/fall.
I dunno when you could clearly point a scent for summer nights, or winter mornings.

On the other hand these classifications make it easier to imagine how the perfume smells even without smelling it, helping the cases where you can't sample before buying.

Excellent question. We already have families of fragrances to get a picture of what we're in for: fougère, oriental, floral, etc. I suppose there are frags that just "fit" better in certain seasons or weather, much like clothing, but there are no hard and fast rules that cannot be broken. As has been demonstrated itt, some people take those guidelines more seriously than others. That said, I would probably not wear six six sprays of Encre Noir or Ungaro III on a hot, muggy day for fear of causing actual respiratory discomfort. If I felt like it, I might wear Set Sail St. Barts for Men on a cold winter's day, just for a taste of summer, but the light citrusy notes wouldn't project too well from under long underwear and a sweater.

Unless you're buying straight from the lab, all frags sit around on shelves. I'd say that places with higher turnover rates, i.e. that sell a lot of shit, keep their stock more rotated. OTOH, I have purchased some vintage bottles from the 80s that smell better than their current counterparts, so I am not one to buy in to "expiration dates" for frags. Maybe I am just lucky, but from the threads I've read on bn on the subject, it seems the smell doesn't change *that* much with time. a lot of people actually believe there is a conspiracy that testers/samples smell better than actual bottles, since those are what generally get people to commit to a bottle.

as for degradation over time... if you store your fragrance near heat or light it will degrade pretty quickly. As long as it's stored in a cool place it should last many years. Some people still have stuff from the 90s that smells great.

The great thing about frags is they react with your body chemistry so oftentimes you have to give each one a couple full days' wear before you can really make up your mind about it. And even then, I've changed my mind about them months or years later.

Anyway, BdC is incredibly popular and that's because it smells great. Great does not exactly equal interesting, as you have discovered. MI/GIT are both fine scents, but I find I rarely wear either any more. What I have discovered is that "young" frags generally trend towards sweet and sweet is not all that interesting. Sure, sugar tastes great at first, but I need some salty or savory to make the sweet more interesting.

Here are a couple frags that I think skew "young" but are still interesting. I'm assuming you are looking for a signature scent, so I'm not going to go too weird here:

I recently copped a bottle of CdG - 2

Now, I love it. It took me a while but whenever the aldehydes really set in I immediately got flashbacks to my grandmother which made me realize the "smelling like an old woman" thing was actually true. I don't care too much though, so I didn't mind it.

One issue I have not just with this but with all fragrances in general is distinguishing notes.

CdG - 2 is notably aldehydic and has this spicy/woody/aromatic vibe. But one thing that I've heard time and time again that apparently is very predominant is Ink. I have fuck all clue what the hell Ink is, but I'm probably having trouble figuring it out; because the only way I'll notice something specific if it's very powerful and recognizable. From where is that average? I might be talking outta my ass here since I don't own any Creed, but saw the spray is like a firetruck hose on a video, compared to for example Hermes ones. Made me think how much it can change between frag to frag, you can overspray with 2-3 sprays on some perfumes, and others with 5-6 falling short. It'd be interesting to know a precise estimate for certain perfume houses/specific perfumes.

I use Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille every day except in the summer and I find it to be the most mature fragrance I've ever used. It has a great longevity from first application in the morning and I find it almost gets stronger throughout the day. People (grills) more often than not make some comment as to how good I smell too. I don't know what they make it with to make it last so long though, seriously two sprays on your neck and one on your wrist/rubbed together is potent enough for a day.

There are tiers because of one, how well it is made, how long it last ,how well it projects. Does it use high quality ingredients, was the ingredient dried before you use it? How well does the notes stand out? can you smell the vetiver in rose 31? can you smell the musk ? The difference between a high tier edt from the low tier is can you smell the alchohol? I can clearly smell the alchohol in Nautica voyage but i cannot smell it in Aqua di parma blu mediterraneo. Because it is well made. Basic bitch here.

I wear deodorant. Old Spice Fresh, going on 20 years.

I've had compliments from girls I've been close with.

Never really bothered with scents other than lotion (http://www.aromatherapyassociates.com/usa/refinery/refinery-and-skincare/the-refinery-revitalising-moisturiser.html).). It's expensive to me, but I love the smell and the way it makes me feel. Just makes me feel more confident somehow.

Anyway, my questions:

What do you do about competing scents?

Between deodorant and lotion, it seems like too much. Does your cologne/fragrance just cover everything?

Do some of you not wear deodorant, or is there a scentless brand?

When I first tried DH, I didn't quite get it. It's a bit of a slow burn, maybe it won't knock your socks off next to a bunch of other pretty-good fragrances on the shelf, but it stays really nice throughout. It's also kind of complex, and you'll pick up different notes throughout wearing it.

Not very much, but you can tell if someone lets you know it´s there. The honey and tobacco are much more noticeable. Gonna have to wait a bit more to see how long it lasts on me, though fragrantica says it´s decent.

Check your local mall for a spray. Just got a sample and I think Im in love.

I have several A*Men flankers and it is my second favorite after Pure Malt. I don't get any cherry, personally, but the nose is a funny organ.

All those are quantitative properties which 100% can be used to categorize manufactured fragrances into tiers, but what I meant was it really doesnt matter what "tier" a fragrance is in if it doesnt mix well to your natural pheromones. Everyone has different objectives when applying a fragrance and a "tier list" should not be the main influencing factor when picking out a scent as long as whatever scent they choose helps them achieve their objective. (Ex. if its to help you get laid who cares if you're using low tier shit the girl/guy likes it)

Yeah I tried that one, it smelled a lot ilke coconut on me. Smelled more like coconut than cologne on my skin but it was decent, preferred Virgin Island Water and aventus though I think, those were the only ones I tried.

A cologne that girls find sexy (thats also good and that I like) would give me a bigger confidence boost than having one that I just like for myself, so not sure what to get
