Is this a good casual watch /fa/? Or do you guys think there is something better out there?

>> No.10270570

yeah, I think that's a great choice but personally I'd prefer quartz, simply because I care more about accuracy. but you know, your call.

seiko is a good brand, quartz or automatic, get a solar powered watch if you never want to fuck around with a battery change

>muh hate on battery change

I don't know why /fa/ hates battery changing so much. I sometimes even look forward to that because I like opening watches. just some buy batteries beforehand if you really like the watch. if the thing ticks for 1-3 years, that's fine.

check out Lorus and Pulsar (both are Seiko daughter-brands) watches too. Orient is also Seiko (or so I've heard) but I think they are more upper class and most are either full dressy or full diver.

>> No.10270721

The styling is fine for a casual watch. My only warning would be to check out some Seiko 5s in person before buying anything. I saw some at a jewellery store and was taken aback by how small and dinky they are.

Not to say that the only good watches are massive things that look like you strapped a wallclock to your arm, just make sure it looks okay on you first!

>> No.10270738

>>10270721
OP might not have a feeling for that yet but once you own a few watches, you get a good idea about sizes. I like that a lot of Seiko 5s are 38mm, some even 40-43mm. now, for automatics, they are usually thicker than quartz and sometimes I find 13mm case depth of many automatics bothersome.

hi from l.a.

6'2"

34mm watch.

1960 seiko marvel. hand winder, but i don't wear it everyday so no biggie.

take "rules" with a grain of salt. i happen to think anything over 40mm starts to look silly. but that's just me.

fa watches?
if you're cheap, gold casio digital. won't work with every fit, but it's nice to have in the collection.

the raketa big zero's completely effay and pretty cheap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DhdlWS63Wc

seiko has a sub-brand called alba. look into the "alba riki" line, named after designer riki watanabe. some beautiful watches for like $150ish. can usually find them on amazon or ebay, generally aren't sold outside japan.

if minimal is your thing and you want to beat everyone over the head with that fact, most of you will be satisfied with something from here: https://www.dezeenwatchstore.com/product-category/mens-watches/

if you want a watch with a little more substance, you'll have to pay.

nomos and junghans are on my shortlist of watches to own.

omega speedmaster/moonwatch is a meme, but if i was just buying one watch to wear everyday for the rest of my life, that'd be it. also love their vintage constellations and seamasters.

also have a few more vintage seikos i'll post if anyone gives a shit. i get mine from ebay generally.

shit can be addictive. you'll go from never seeing the point of watches to wanting a dozen.

i know reddit's shit, but /r/watches will give you a good idea of what's out there.

SKX007 plus a Super Oyster bracelet. Alternatively, Obris Morgan Explorer II if it's not too late to preorder one, or Steinhart Ocean One if you want something that looks like a Rolex. Also the Orient divers are nice, Ray or Mako are basically the same thing with different styling.

If you don't like divers then maybe a SARB033 or 035 is another nice everyday sort of watch on a bracelet. If you want Swiss then Hamilton has very nice stuff like the Jazzmaster Day-date or Intramatic but they're more like $500-600.

Tissot Visodate. Multiple options. White dial, black dial, leather strap, steel mesh. On sale at Amazon. Bout 450 for the leather, another hundred for steel.

There are some really nice seikos in that range. Sarb033 is steel and sportier, Sarb035 is elegant as fuck. Both on sale at amazon for 280 and 350 respectively. Absolutely steals at those prices.

Without knowing what style watch you like, it's hard to rec anything.

If you're worried about investing in shit? Buy from a watch brand with some history who still make quality shit (Hamilton, Seiko, Junghans, won't bother listing them all or ones out of your price range). Never buy shit like Fossil or Invicta, don't buy watches from fashion/designer brands. Buy a watch from a watch company and go from there.

i know what you mean. the leather strap that comes with it is fantastic. dark blue stitching to match the blue seconds hand. but some aftermarket bands kind of take it to another level.

the seconds hand. i know it's a small detail. but the 17 has a hand dipped in red. the 15 doesn't. it's not a smart financial decision, but I'd always regret going with the plain hand.

i get you on the other hands. i don't love the swords. and usually prefer a shape closer to >>10281491. but they usually match hands to the hour markers, and these are perfect complements.

JFYI, hands have nothing to do with ticking. All the noise comes from balance and escapement, where jewels hit steel. Hands layout then depends on how you position wheels, they make no audible noise. Central second and small second may have the same balance and escapement and tick the same.

What might account for quiet ticking is maybe overall smaller movement, less resonating space in the case (adding ppastic rings to fit the movement in the case or smaller case) or thicker/better insulated case.
