i didn't bother with a levels. I did them, but the winter exams for year 13, just didn't turn up for any of them. I worked on a building site with my uncle for that time, but after breaking my wrist, i thought "lets just carry on". I'd look around at all these kids who were revising all day in our sixth form, i spent half the day having a fag and driving around in my car. they said what unis they wanted to go to, modest ones like Cardiff and Leeds for all the middle class kids on here, but for my school, a russell group was a massive achievement. I got into York, AAAB (I didn't know you can't get an A* if you skip an exam).

I don't know if I got in on the quota because of my background, which I like to think I did, but either way it was horrible. The kids who would of been the popular, big smile, instagram all day type thought i was weird, the poshos thought i was too brass and common, and the nerds didn't like the fact that i'd take benzos with vodka. I didn't fit in anywhere, i retreated into myself. i'd go to lectures, and go out to a pub and drink on my own. i got pissed off easily, i'd start fights outside the su, i dropped out in the summer after freshers.

so, i think uni is horrible. a place of hyper-capitalism and deep house, but its probably because i can't exist in that environment, let alone any environment in society

Really affected my course and I finished with a 2:2, dumbest thing was I didn't tell anyone about the problems I wash having.

I did my MA at York and it was a very different experience from my previous University. York was full of cocksure yet naive privately educated students who I think are probably impossible to get along with unless you're from that same background.

If you reapplied elsewhere to a reputable but 'normal' University you might have more luck. York was a depressing year for me but fortunately I'd had good experiences before so I wasn't put off.

Depending on interests/tastes, there's a number of things to do.

Too many to fully get to know. But recommend The Parrot, The Dolphin, Miller's Arms and the White Hart. They're typically old and atmospheric, and, importantly, you can talk in them (i.e. you're not drowned out by music/loud people). Parrot and Miller's Arms sell good food as well. If you're a beer/ale person, they're the one.

Promotions and venues change on an almost annual basis, so what you attend in first year will undoubtedly change by the time you graduate. Venue (on-campus club) is guaranteed student club UK Top 40-#ladwavebantermenowfaggot-#cheekynando's every Wednesday/Saturday on the dot. Occasionally it'll have promotional event with a decent act/guest DJ, but these are few and far between.

Cuban tends to be more left field, but it's still pretty staid. Chemistry is where locals and Christ Church students fight over girls and drinking spots. In my experience, the bars with live stuff tended to be better if you were interested in music, Alberry's and the Penny Theatre in particular. Just keep your eye out for events (there's plenty of advertising for them) if you're looking for a specific niche.
