1) Hugo Boss didn't design any uniforms. The SS uniforms usually attributed to him were designed by Karl Diebitsch, an artist and SS member, and a grahpic designer named Walter Heck. Hugo Boss's company had production contracts for a lot of military and government uniforms, including the SS.

Boss was a Party member and a strong supporter of the regime, so he, like all those people, deserve nothing but your undying hatred for their role in the regime and its crime.

2) I don't have any first-hand knowledge or experience here, but I've heard reliably that German uniforms of the period were markedly inferior to others in terms of function, ease of movement, etc. etc.

3) And I have to disagree about the German camo. The only camo of the war that looked good was the camo used on the British Denison smocks, and those only after they got worn to subtlety like Bernard Montgomery's in pic related.

4) Generally speaking, the Brits had the most /fa/ uniforms, certainly out of duty uniforms. Runner up is probably this special experimental tropical uniform that only got worn by some US commandos in the Pacific. Good pics of it are hard to come by, but next post is the best I could Google up in ten minutes.

Nah, it's just a mess. Sorta similar to modern digicamo, so it was probably fairly effective, but aesthetically I don't like it. I don't like most camouflage patterns. You have to remember what they're supposed to do - to break up the lines of the garment and the human body. It's rare that something can both accomplish that and be pleasant to look at.

Again, nah. Like even on a basic level, it doesn't fall on the body well. It coasts on being black, the myth that ~~a real designer~~ was responsible for it, and edgelords trying to make like "the Nazis were horrible, but they looked really cool!"

It's an untenable position, one that only exists because so many artists are horrible people that dudes who just don't care developed some nonsense about separating artists from their art. As if art wasn't an intentional act, as if form and content don't necessitate each other.

Think for a minute: what was Diebitsch's and Heck's goal in designing the uniform? What effect were they trying to have on the wearer and viewers? The uniform was designed for wearers to twitch into action at orders, and make other twitch into action at theirs, with power backed by violence and political terror to an extraordinary degree. It's the outfit of the Führerprinzip.

Try to imagine someone in a relaxed and egalitarian way dancing, or chatting, or kissing someone in that uniform, or anything pleasant and on an even keel with another. To do so is dissonant, and not just because of all the other things people did besides those in it. The garment isn't made for that. It's made for taking and giving of orders backed by violence.

Like, understand, the uniform is odious not only for what people did wearing it, but for the way it designed to have people live and experience the world in relation to it. It was designed for a particular way that would be repugnant even if the Nazi Party and the SS were a little footnote cult that killed nobody.

You have to either maintain that Diebitsch and Heck simply failed - contrary to all the "Nazis were mad elegant and seductive, man" shit that usually motivates people admiring the uniform - or you have to condemn it as an effective work in an abhorrent cause. Either way, ultimately, you have to call the work bad or you have to cop to admiring the ethos of it.
