AA didn't start as the basic staple, oh-fuck-I-have-to-buy-clothes company it's become, though. For a decent bit of last decade, it was a trendy upstart company with a distinct aesthetic. Charney was the guy to drive it through that and the reason it happened. Now that it's almost the definition of mainstream he had to go.

That's a completely amoral and apolitical, 100% business analysis, for the record. It has to be said Charney was a POS and his aesthetic vision was shitty in a lot of ways.

In the same way, it has to be said that for all of their problems, AA ads served a cultural purpose for a lot of the Aughts. Like in 2006, when this classic came out, it was way beyond a lot of Middle America. Before the explosion of social media, this was probably the most affirmative, outside-the-standard fashion image of a woman lots of people saw.

Now we have Instagram and AA can sell clothes for people to wear to their goddamn start up offices, w/e.

Bankruptcy courts are usually pretty good about keeping the underlying operations going while debts are restructured and shit like that. Chances are that someone would take over and keep production going while things were hashed out. I suspect this means that there'd really be no change for those using AA shirts, especially considering that avenue of sale is probably one of AA's main sources of profit.

Honestly, bankruptcy isn't really that big of a deal for a company's survival. It's a huge "fuck you" to creditors and a quick indication of a mismanaged company, but that's no surprise with AA.
