Are you all new?

This is one of the oldest jokes on /fa/, and it's posted nearly every time anyone asks about how to "pull something off".

But not thinking this hard about it.

It's hard to help when you don't actually say what your specific problem is.

How are denim jackets for styles other than workwear?

>> No.10159169

Denim's just a fabric. You can cut it into any shape you want and it doesn't have to be a trucker or anything overtly rugged. It's just a twill that happens to be a bit thicker and more substantial; nobody goes around thinking you can't have a twill coat or twill blazer or twill parka.

Levis really is the answer. GAP Jackets are an ok substitute, but you are really paying for excellent quality when you buy a Levi's jacket.

Outside of jeans, denim is a way of adding bulkiness, functionality, texture, and a sense of time/fading/aging (or lack of it) to an outfit.

Wear it when you want to make your upper body chunkier. This could mean wearing it over a shirt and skinny jeans (different shade than the jacket). Easy shit. If you're going this route, go with a color pallete for your outfit. Being matchy in this case will make you look like you were dressed by your mom or a groom in a Canadian tuxedo. The jacket can be any color denim for this category.

Denim's more durable than it is warm, and it takes a long time to dry when it's wet. If it's really cold or raining, you probably want to wear a different jacket. It can just be a layer to warm you up a little, though, over a sweater or something. Denim's functional in that it's really durable and can take a lot of abuse. Unless it's dark denim that you want to keep looking new, the jacket's going to look better with more wear and tear. Because you want it to last a long time, go with metal buttons instead of a zipper. A zipper can get fucked up easily, but metal buttons will last forever. This is more in the realm of workwear, so matching your jeans to your jacket is passable. Other things to consider wearing if you're going for this: flannel/mountain/work shirts, work boots, beater shoes, looser jeans/pants.

Next you've got texture. This is more in line with Japanese denim and fashion. The jacket is a compliment to the rest of your outfit and the textures therein. Nice cotton pants and shirts, tweed and wool, cableknit sweaters, woven or knit shoes, reverse denim, suede, grainy leather, and interesting fabrics are all things to keep in mind.

Aging is the last category, and is hard to implement well without looking like a tool. This is where fades and worn denim work the best. Here, you're focusing a lot on your clothing's "character" or history. Tearing, patches/alterations, and a little grime go a long way.

Good luck, Denim Dan.

I fucking love denim jackets.

1. It needs to be the right color. If you mostly wear chinos, it needs to be dark (see pic). If you wear dark jeans, you need to wear a lighter wash (see your pic). This si the most important part. If you wear jeans the same color as the jacket, you'll be wearing a denim suit. That will look awful, and you will be mocked relentlessly.

2. It needs to fit you perfect. Literally perfect. You need to buy one form a store. Levi's jackets are all cut different just like their jeans. Try hundreds of different fits until one fits perfect, and I mean perfect. I've tried smalls that were too big, and larges that were too small. You cannot just assume one will fit. Tailor it if you know how (yes I'm serious). The sleeves should not go past your fingers when you stretch them (I like the sleeves to reach the base of my thumbs).

3. Denim Jackets are excellent layering pieces. I like to wear a flannel beneath. If its real cold, I wear a thin jacket (I like green or red personally) underneath it. If I don't really want to wear a flannel, I'll wear a tasteful band shirt. Usually my RHCP or Led Zep shirt. This makes it much more of a causal look.

4*. This step is unnecessary, but just something I like to do. I add a little pin of my favorite bands. I have three. Its not really stylish, but its a nice little detail I like to add. Gives it some character Try and put your own spin on it.

There is your ultimate guide to denim jackets. I've been wearing them for over a decade, and I have a fetish for them. Its my signature piece. Have fun.

Relaxed does not fit as well. The regular is not quite slim fit, but fits closer to your body. Get the regular if you're a bit heavy, but definitely get the slim if you look good in it.

To be honest I personally don't think tshirts look good under denim jackets. I always where a button up under mine but that's just me.

Hozier does the whole denim jacket thing pretty well imo. Look at some pics of him.

Would you guys recommend going for a lighter shade or darker shade for these jeans. I would use an actual pic but I'm at work and not wearing them.
