You need to changr the strap badly, it doesn't compliment the watch at all. They sell the textile ones which come with Ahoi, should have grabbed that. I ordered brown satin leather one.

The dealer I got it from suggested the exact same thing in an email, but I've got a lot of watches and a lot of options when it comes to 20mm straps. I'll put a better strap on it and take pics. I'll even put it next to my Tangente for comparison.

So last month I went to visit my dad for father's day and he gave me this watch that used to belong to my grandfather.

Now this might seem insincere or naive but I have no idea about watches at all.

All I know is that it's Seiko Quartz on it and it looks gold. The wrist band is too small for me to wear so if I ever wanted to I'd have to get it enlarged.

Can /fa/ tell me if this watch is good or not? I mean, I don't even wear watches. It's got my grandfather's name and company (he was a foreman at a Pepsi-Cola factory) engraved on the back so I'll always keep as a token of him but do I want to get the band changed?

anything Seiko is good. it's usually that way. it's very simple though but it has a date function which is always good to have and having a square face on a watch is less common. just rock it, wear it.

It's nothing special, but it's not bad either. Plenty of people will talk shit about quartz watches, but those vintage Seiko quartz watches are all surprisingly nice in my experience. I have my own dadseiko and another couple of watches from my dad and my grandfather and I really like wearing them.

I guess you'd probably have to look up the reference on ebay or something to see if you can buy an identical bracelet (maybe from a broken watch) to take a few extra links from to make it fit you. Those little numbers at the bottom of the watch should be the reference for the watch, search for that number. I wouldn't try to replace it with a different style of bracelet though unless you really can't find an original one.

On which one? The yellow one has a brand new crystal. I did polish the crystal on the white one and I managed to take off the AR coating and it looks a bit better than it did but it's still pretty scratched up so I guess I might try to hunt down a new replacement.

I hate mineral crystals, they're like the unhappy medium between acrylic you can polish and sapphire which never scratches.

seiko invented the quartz watches but there are only like 4 desirable models worth money on the used market

basically the model you have is pretty disposable

70's and 80's quartz watches in general left a ton to be desired and even the made in china timex watches of today feature nicer quartz movements which are just about the size of a dime glued to a face plate

you can't really enlarge a wath case, and the movement (engine that drives the watch) isn't really worth transplanting into a new case

would you swap the engine of your grandfather's old 1987 toyota into a 2015 chassis and pay out the nose to do it?

with that said there are generally a ton of places that you can get a new battery for $30 and if it needs servacing you can get that done for around $150

with that said i;d value the watch at $15 if yo manage to find a byer

and at the grand seiko priepoint they're not the market leader they once were (10 years ago)

and the only thing note worthy coming out of their factory is the credor spring drive minute repeaters

stick a seiko label on it and charge $1500 for it at macy's making it inhouse by hand in japan makes it patek territory

it's a nice clean look. problem being it's a cheap quartz movement and the build quality is shit. this is true of all fashion brands; AX, Emperio, Kenneth Cole, whatever. they look great (assuming you like that house style) but they're literally the cheapest, shittiest watches inside. A Timex Weekender or Easy Reader is better quality and comes without any hipster tax, they're about 30-40 USD. Yours was probably well over 50, because it has some gay designers name on it, and it's gonna break soon.
