outerwear is like footwear in that its impossible to go cheap and get something decent.
just keep this in mind: you dont need to get everything right now, on the spot. if youve been looking at a piece for half a year, saving up to it, trying it on in store, figuring out your size, looking for it used online ect. and you still absolutely want it, chances are you wont regret your purchase and you wont get tired of it.
when i bought my first leather jacket, a fall06 dior homme, the price made it a huge commitment for me, but i have never doubted that purchase.
as for styles of outerwear there really is a ton of possibilities and i think youll have to figure out what you like and what suits you best by yourself. heres some general advice though: longer pieces of outerwear are hard to pull off if youre short. this goes for coats, trenchcoats, duffles and parkas. same for cropped jackets, you have to be tall and skinny to pull them off.
