Okay so basically when you meet a girl, she's either going to be attracted to you a lot, sort of attracted to you, or totally not attracted to you at all. The third case will lead straight to the friendzone if you press her for contact. The first case all but precludes ending up in the friendzone, as long as she's not drowning in choices and as long as you don't make yourself more valuable as a companion than a partner.
Most of the time, you're going to end up in either the second or the third category. In the second, there is essentially a holding period where her curiosity will allow you to get to know her and make it a little more clear whether you're mate material or just someone worth keeping around as a friend. This period can last anywhere from a few weeks to several many months, depending on how much contact you have with her and how well or ill said contact goes. This period is where all 'game' in the like enters the equation. More often than not, if you fuck up, it will be during this time.

As a general rule, if you've known a girl and dealt with her on a regular basis (at least three times a week) for more than 6 months and the relationship has not given any indication of turning physical, prospects are poor. Unless she has a boyfriend or partner during this time which is keeping her hands tied, you should initiate a simple test of her affinity by pressing her, gently and subtly, for a bit of intimacy. Ask her casually how she would feel about being left alone with you, or contrive a situation in which you two are left alone. Parties are a good occasion to try something of this nature.
