Reading this is deflating. Suggesting all actions need any form of concrete base as a means for justification is a warped reflection of reaLiti. The true nature of this world is people do things to see what happens when they do them. Instead of assuming his ignorance on the origin of the design, you could just as easily use it as a bridge to connect to him as a person, but from the inflection I gather from your paragraph it seems you would prefer disparaging someone whose actions don't fit your idea of how the world should work. Tattoos don't require deep meaning or understanding of a "historical religious texts" (?), they're just tattoos.
