Try a medium length cut then. You can just brush it all back when you're at work. I work in a professional service, so they expect me looking neat and tidy all the time and being able to just brush everything back and look presentable is great. My hair is still pretty long, at around 8-10 inches on top and about half that around the back and sides, so I still have plenty to play with if I want to style it differently when I'm not at work.
If you do end up going for the brushed-back look, you don't want it too short on top. You need some length so that your hair at the front goes back a fair way.
