As anon put "fashioning the image of being individualistic and unique without earning the means or merit through a meaningful human experience" is only half the truth. The oldest tattoos depicted animals the individual has hunted or has seen, or landmarks they have been to. Neither of which was a small feat. It was not only a different time. But a completely different world where that really meant something. You'd only live to about 30 or 40 years old, if that. These marks were an achievement they earned and told a story.

I agree that some people ink themselves with stupid shit. But I cannot agree that the practice as a whole is wrong.
