Finger picking. How coarse is your hair? It's quite easy for me because I have quite tough hair, it's just not long enough to look good which is why I gave up the dream.
Basically start by keeping your hair in two strand twists(overnight) and then use your fingers to undo the strands, don't be rough and don't drag your fingers through your hair or anything. Also moisturize while it's in its twist form by applying the product directly on your scalp.

I'm mixed as well, and relaxing it the few times I've done it accomplished very little.
maybe you need to grow it alot longer?
if you're mixed, your curls/waves are probably looser on their own that someone who isn't as their curls will be more compressed.
