It's like an oxford so I guess it should be as close as possible without touching

There's a video on youtube where Gaziano & Girling do a full test run of a bespoke shoe and he explains stuff like what the perfect length should be (pic related) and how far apart the facings must be. Obviously you can't get it perfect on off the shelf lasts.
