Like most comebacks its a mixture of thing. Dad shoes and chunky shoes started to be the big thing in 2016 (I think?). Dad and chunky does not necessarily mean the same thing, although a shoe can be both. I think with the popularity of 'Dad' shoes, so did other 90s basketball and running shoes. Retro runners (90s runners) were gaining popularity from ~2013-2016, so I think this contributed as well. People wanted basketball shoes from their childhood that aren't the typical Jordan, and the 90s look is sorta still in.

Also, G-Dragon, I'm by no means a follower of K-Pop, I didn't even know who this guy was. But no one can deny the kind of influence these K-Pop stars have. G-Dragon wore a pair of OG Uptempo's in 2016 (i think) before the popularity hit, I think he definitely gave a bump in popularity to the shoe. So many Asians (no disrespect) were wearing Uptempos in my area in 2017-2018. I would argue the Uptempo hype has cooled off now, or even in the past year. You'll see the odd person wear them but they were way bigger in 2017-18.
