It's not over complicated. The construction is necessary so they can polish every angle and surface. If you don't want the polish they have the same model in one piece.
If the first link was articulated it would look bad because the bracelet is part of the design like the resin models. Without that the case would look angular and would be floating on the wrist.

I have 6 inch wrists and I'm ok with it. The first link not being articulated looks better to me because the watch has its own profile. Without it it would flop down and the case would be the only thing visible. It's the same as the resin models. I do admit that I think I'm at the minimum wrist size that I would consider acceptable. Anything smaller and it might look bad.
