Lancing is an unnecessarily scary word actually... It's generally not a matter of "digging" in it. It's generally just a matter of making a small and shallow hole with a very sharp needle, and then force the gunk out through there. Only clinicians make actual incisions.

This usually makes the inflammation subside. It's a standard treatment for abscesses, since they rarely heal on their own. As long as it's not too big/deep you should be able to take care of it yourself. It would be optimal to do it once it has formed a head, though.

All things are very hard to diagnose over the Internet. Read up beforehand, ask a doc, I'm not a doc, your own responsibility, et c, et c.
