check eBay for Butteros, Common Projects, Acne, etc. I've seen barely used CPs go for $80-170

always always always always buy used if you're on a budget. on eBay CPs are generally $80-250 and they're generally used or near new. You can also cop quality barely used raws for under $100 and some very basic shirts for under $30 apiece.

imo start with a pair of slim jeans, two pairs of shoes (at least one pair of versatile sneakers), a couple shirts and a couple crew neck t-shirts

It's not just the look. You obviously haven't handled them before. I'm not saying the price is entirely justified but there's a reason they're more expensive than Vans. The construction, quality control, materials used to make them, workmanship, lack of branding, durability, etc... this is what you're paying for. Plus you can cop them barely used/new for $100-$300 on eBay
