You get get laundry liquid suited to washing wool. If your machine has a hand wash setting it should work just fine. Just gotta think about the drying time.

What about a tight fitting pair of long brown boots or something like that? I've been pairs that could be considered quite smart.

I mean..you'll still need to wear socks? It's like having a pair of gaitors, stop crap getting in your boot (Including water from rain light showers, dew etc) and keep your lower legs quite warm.
They're great if you're not planning to take your boots off, you have to remove the puttees and it's a royal pain. As far as hiding them they go over your trousers so no chance of that. they look pretty cool, why not just wear them and be okay with it.
