mine was about that far away too. a lot of your experience depends on where you are and how your club's structured, but the actual flying is great.

I don't know if you have your power license or care about power flight at all, but glider flying is a lot more about the actual flying. much less meddling with radios or power settings or whatever. I heard from someone that one hour of glider flying is equivalent to twelve of power flight, and having done both I can attest to that. so it's a good way to get good at flying for cheap (way cheaper than power) if you want to transition later. if you can fly gliders I can almost guarantee that you will get your power license in the minimum time if you self study the systems stuff.

the people you meet will be dependent on your club but I've met some really interesting people. in my experience not the /fa/ demographic so don't join expecting patrick batemans everywhere. my club had a pumpkin drop for Halloween (giant target on the runway, lots of fun) and barbecues sometimes (I'm from Texas).

also, if you've got no flying experience, spend some time on microsoft flight simulator or something before you go. it'll help you a lot and you'll have a much better time if you don't need to spend flights learning what the rudder does, etc. even if you're not 100% sure you'll stick with it, buy a good joystick too.
