Wait you said that you ridden pillion? that without a doubt is the scariest fucking thing, especially when the rider of the bike is experienced and goes in the corners really well. When you ride a moto alone, its a whole different state, because you are in control, you are one with the bike. Try it out yourself, if you are so scared there plenty of options to go about, power/displacement/stance/etc. But try it out, it won't hurt you if you treat it the way it suppose to be treated.

Another thing is, it depends where you live and how people react to motorcycle riders around you.
