Black actually looks good

Greys are a pain in the ass because there's a million shades of them, and darker greys look better than lighter greys, just go to the logical conclusion: black.
Black trousers are incredibly easy to find so you don't have to worry about your trousers wearing out.
They pair beautifully with black shoes, it's just a seamless transition from trouser to shoe.
Black contrasts perfectly with white shirts, the black makes the white look whiter, and the white makes the black look blacker.
Any pop of colour is made immediately more impressive by contrast against the sheer austerity of the black.
It's sleek. Black looks good in modern clothing and even better in classic clothing.

I think they work well as a means of shortening the presence of the shirt.
As in, rather than people noticing you have a waistcoat, they first notice that your shirt doesn't take up much presence in the outfit.
