Sup /fa/, I don't know what board to go to with this, so I'm asking you guys.

I'm about to buy myself a safety razor for Christmas. I really only want one because buying replacement blades for my Mach 3 is too fucking expensive, but apparently they also offer a better shave with practice. Anyway, can I get that better shaving experience using my gel/foam or do I have to do the whole old-fashioned shaving cream and brush deal? The whole setup looks cool, admittedly, but I wasn't trying to spend more than necessary. Can I get by using a DE razor with some basic hand-applied Gillette shaving gel?
